Morrowind

Skyrim to return some of Morrowind's atmosphere

  • Comment
Todd Howard has admitted to the Official Xbox Magazine that attempts to make Oblivion feel more "welcoming" resulted in the loss of "the wonder of discovery" that characterised Morrowind.

"With Skyrim, we're trying to bring some of that back and walk the line between Morrowind and Oblivion. Where it's at first familiar looking, but has its own unique culture and spin on it," said Mr Howard.

The province of Cyrodiil was previously described as a "jungle" in the lore but became a European countryside in the game.

Bethesda provided no lore explanation of why this change took place. Michael Kirkbride, creator of much of the lore for Morrowind and Oblivion eventually provided an unofficial explanation - that Tiber Septim had changed the jungle into what it is today by his power.

Another huge problem that isn't mentioned enough is the monotony of Oblivion's landscape. If you've seen one dungeon, fort or Ayeleid Ruin you've seen them all. Yes they are beautiful and detailed, but what fun is it to explore places that all have the same textures? Search fort, find chest with Shadowbanish Wine, Search Ayeleid Ruin, find Welkynd and Varla Stones. YAWN.

I completely agree with Ricksamik. Bethesda needs to remake Daggerfall with all the bugs fixed (Being able to BEAT the damn game would be nice!). The game mechanics of the older games were better.

I Think Everyone is missing the point that Bethesda laid down in the Introduction of their games in the early days! You are free to travel and do what the hell you like in our game! fast travel, walk or ride it's up to you the individual! why are we hearing so much bitching from people against fast travel! Set your global to 1.0 and refuse to fast travel. Download a great mod file no 37510 that includes all the camping gear you need! What is the Problem!

The thing with fast travel, I could seem them not wanting to make people pay gold for it, it might piss some people off. But if they made the coach between towns free with good explanation (Funded by the council, like the Black Horse Courier). And maybe pay a small sum at the mages guild to be teleported to a certain place, with a one time use return scroll, I think it would make everyone happy, and add to the game.

That's mentioned in the game too actually, it's said that it used to be heavily wooded but then Septim and company cut down all of the trees and built the imperial city.

As far as I can see the fast travel system of OB was introduced by Beth to bring in 'new blood' to their game and allowed us oldies to walk/ride if we wished, however they did take away the magic of Silt strider and teleportation, I feel that with the new game engine it should be possible to organise in 'options' features for everyone including an actual coach/Boat ride,(where the player can take in the scenery or go put the trash out, make a drink) walk/ride, and Teleport via MG or spells, the Fast Travel could assume the PC takes the walk/ride route and adds an occasional 'Encounter' en route, this should be optional in the 'options menu' IE: fast Travel encounters On/Off... it can't be that difficult.
However Beth are probably finalising the details of the game now and have all of what they want already in place so what we put on our wish list goes up the chimney like the letter to Santa that we have to throw in the fire.

As for the Lore of the Jungle didja follow that link...Jeeeeezzzz that is so lame, "cos god said so"!

I like the sound of walking the line between Oblivion and Morrowind. I have to confess I enjoyed Oblivion better, scenery an all wise, I'm not a fan of the LSD trip flora and fauna, creatures etc, seen in Morrowind or Shivering Isles for that matter. I think that stuff belongs in the past. Morrowind was a better explorers adventure, but there is one thing from Daggerfall that I wish Bethesda would re-introduce back into Skyrim, an in-game 3d rotateable interior map for large complex dungeons. Jeez I'm getting old!

Corakus, Morrowind had a lot of those quests as well, without Fast Travel.
