File tagging needs you!

  • Comment
Over the past few weeks I have been working on a tagging system for files in the file database. This new system allows all users (not just authors) to specify tags for a file that better describe its contents.

The frontend that allows users to suggest and rate tags for specific files has just been launched. You can access it by clicking the "Tag this file" link on file pages.

I have yet to begin coding the search functionality, the system that will allow you to search for files via its confirmed tags. My thinking is to allow users of the site time to get to grips with the system and use it as much as possible, ready for when I finally code the searching system. Hopefully by that point a lot of the files will have some confirmed tags and the search function will have a use! You need to jump to it and get on it; go visit your favourite files, or the files you've downloaded recently from TESSource and start tagging them up.

If you don't know what tagging is, or don't understand the concept after reading the blurb on the tagging window, you might want to read through my guide. It helps to better explain the system and how to use it.

Ok I have opened this thread for Tagging suggestions. I hope it is appropriate.

Oh, and once again, I'll repeat that and OBSE category is greatly needed. While I was tagging the Keychain mod, I didn't know what to add besides Oblivion and Language - English, as none of the Item categories applied. <img class=">

RE: tags for the key chain mod
key chain seems like a User Utility. But That is probably wrong, I use the word utility in my OMOD tags for files like the keychain and the Expanded Hotkeys and Spell Delete, but thats just my interpretation. But an OBSE tag is still a definitive answer.

    RE: the way over-tagged entries
    See this Mod Tags

I am beginning to think this is not the correct place to post these suggestions. It may be that they are not being seen at all and should be here :

The reason I have come to the aforementioned conclusion is the lack of any responce from admin here.

    Just another thing to consider.

I think that once the tagging system is implemented, eahc mod author should be responsible for tagging their own mods, while moderators could have the power to tag those files that weren't tagged by their creators.

I mean, if I consider that my mod is some sort of mod, I wouldn't like that someone with too much free time in their hands came and added whatever they thought my mod was about, just because he wanted to mess around.

I'm not saying that responsible user tagging isn't a good idea, but I have come across some mods which had ALL the categories added to the suggested tag, and spent quite some time removing the superflous ones. I don't know if that was some kind of bug, or some kid that didn't have anything better to do.

Could we get a textbox for inputing a tag-name suggestion and say ten or twenty users confirm a tag-name and it sticks? Make it only one name per user per confirmation cycle perhaps.

And any tag that receives less than say 10 files use gets put on a vote out list for user confirmation to be removed. Ten strikes and a tag is sacked.

    Just some thoughts.

I've done all of up to Page 9 aka 90 files.

I think the two most needed tags that aren't there yet are definitely something like patch/fix, and OBSE. At the moment the only tag that even comes close is Mod Dependancy and that is a really broad ranging tag. Is there any possibility of you adding those tagging options Dark0ne?

Also perhaps it would be a good idea to add a reminder to the author to suggest some tags for their files on the page that confirms the upload. e.g You can find your file on it's homepage url/here/url. Don't forget to suggest some tags for your file.

By the way Sativarg gets +1 Kudos for helping to tag so many files <img class=">.

 The good news is that I think I was the confirming vote on over 140 tags yesterday. It jumped from 390 or so to about 530. Now to just comb through the other 170 quest files that I need to suggest tags on.
    Wow nice work! b-('u')-d
I keep finding mods I have forgotten. The really good ones like 10Travellers that I haven't seen for ages. It pays to tag!

OK in case you missed this.

    Tag Status
Once the number of confirmed tags reaches 1,000 I will be launching the new tag search feature. Get tagging folks!

I really think that an OBSE category in the tags section would be very helpful for the implementation of the system.

I came here to suggest that very same thing.

Edit: This is a really great way to procrastinate by the way. I just spent the past 3 hours confirming tags. <img class=">

    I'll second that.
