Sol's Skill History Swap Challenge
(For the 2025 May Modathon Week 2 Theme Challenge: History & Horror)
For OpenMW 0.48 or 0.49
Revel in horror as your skills are drained based on their history of use. However, when one skill is drained, another is buffed in its stead. Adapt to survive.
[INSTALLATION]
Unzip the mod subdirectory wherever you put your mods, or on a datapath listed in openmw.cfg (default Windows location C:\Users\...\Documents\My Games\OpenMW), and check the checkbox in OpenMW Launcher > Data Files > modNameHere.omwscripts. Alternatively, you may use the Append option in the Data Directories tab in the OpenMW launcher to specify your path via file dialogue.
[DESCRIPTION]
With this challenge mode, any time you level or gain significant progress toward leveling a skill, that skill's level will be drained, and another skill at random will be buffed. In order to succeed, you must adapt. Yes... you could cheese things via liberal application of restore stat effects, but that's not the most fun, is it? Hard Mode removes this option.
For optional alternative-ish challenges, you could perhaps configure the mod's settings such that
- Include acrobatics / athletics for a "fun" time! The more you jump, the less you can jump again (until skill swaps favor acrobatics).
- Reaching level 100 in a skill resets it to level 1 without saving progress post-100. If you ever reach 100, you lose everything.
- Enable hardmode, in which case restoration effects will do nothing for you.
- If you set the drain rate to 1 (and potentially enable hardmode), you will never be able to level skills again! Haha!
- Set the drain rate to 100 (and potentially the time resolution to 0.1) if you want to be forced to swap constantly. Every skill you use will shortly be drained to nothing.
[RECOMMENDATIONS]
You may also also like to use an anti-pause mod so that the game does not pause while you're menuing! (https://modding-openmw.gitlab.io/pause-control/)
[CONFLICTS]
This mod may conflict with any other mod that hijacks the levelling system, such as Natural Character Growth and Decay.
