About this mod

This mod tweaks racial attributes, skill bonuses, and abilities to make the races' unique identities as described in lore and through their vanilla bonuses clearer and better translate them into gameplay. Thanks to the power of MWSE Lua, Argonians will experience dynamic skill buffs based on their sex, experienced by Argonians as life-phases.

Description

In Morrowind, racial stats are all over the place. Some races, like Redguard or Breton, are great at communicating to the player what the strengths of that race are in lore and providing a distinct playstyle from other races. Others, like Orc or Nord, fall into a general archetype fail to distinguish themselves. And some like Dark Elf fail to distinguish themselves at all, and have bonuses which do not reflect or even contradict their descriptions in lore. This mod aims to provide all races with a unique identity by rebalancing their stats to distinguish them from the other races and to align with their descriptions in lore.

As an example, let's look at the most extensively rebalanced race in this mod, the Dark Elf.

In vanilla, Dark Elf is a race without much specialization. It has no real weaknesses, and few notable strengths. What strengths it have fall into the stealth and magic specializations, which is in blatant contradiction with the description in lore that Dark Elves produce "superior warriors and sorcerers." To fix this, I removed stealth skill specializations like short blade and light armor, spreading their bonuses across long blade and medium armor as a replacement armor skill. As for their attributes, I emphasize their "powerful intellect" and "strong and agile physiques" with otherwise average physical and mental attributes balanced out by poor personality and—unique to Dark Elves—poor luck, because Dark is among other things understood to mean "ill-favored by fate" while Dunmer may be translated as "cursed people." I class the Dark Elf as a hybrid archetype which I call The War Wizard, with above-average (though not superior) ability in both martial and magical skills and attributes. Their broad proficiencies, or at least lack of deficiencies, in physical and mental attributes is balanced by their tendency to mistrust and be mistrusted by others and their ill-favor with fate. To further their viability in moderate magicka use playstyles, I gave them a 0.5 max magicka bonus, which can be bolstered for heavy magicka use with an appropriate birthsign.

Also of special note is the Argonian.

I made minimal changes to the Argonian's attributes, only moving +5 from strength to willpower for females. I didn't significantly change the spread of skills, only removing medium armor, but the way those bonuses are applied is unique to Argonians using a Lua script made by Petethegoat. All skill bonuses have been flattened to +5, with the remaining +15 from athletics and the removal of medium armor being dynamically assigned based on sex, or life-phase. This is to emphasize the distinct adaptations of the male and female life-phases as described in the Argonian in-game race description: "The female life-phase is highly intelligent, and gifted in the magical arts. The more aggressive male phase has the traits of the hunter: stealth, speed, and agility."
