[Introduction]

Greetings all!

There is a long and at times tragic history to the preservation of old morrowind mods. The biggest tragedy was when an old site called planetelderscrolls permanently shut down, taking all mods with it, which probably numbered in the thousands. Naturally the idea of mod preservation became a massive concern to any active Morrowind Modder at the time.

One such person who actively developed an archive website solely for mod preservation, well before the Nexus was even a thing, was Fliggerty. The purpose wasn't just for his mods or his friends mods, but to archive all morrowind mods new and old, eventually expanding to other games, but always with a special emphasis on reclaiming mods that were only uploaded on now defunct sites.

Fliggerty's domains for this purpose were fliggerty.com (Great House Fliggerty) and modhistory.com (Morrowind Modding History). Over the course of many years, he managed to collect literally well over 13,000 mods. He has maintained these sites for roughly 20 years, and is pretty much the sole reason why we have access to the huge banquet of pre-nexus morrowind mods to begin with. Naturally his efforts deserves the largest bulk of the credit for preservation.

[So why upload to the Nexus?]

Sadly, Fliggerty's sites are currently down. While there is a promise by Fliggerty himself that these sites will be re-consolidated with the mods and history from both sites, it has been over a month since that time. As someone who has personally used plenty of mods from these sites over the years, it is still worrisome to see how fragile this preservation is, even though Fliggerty has done an incredible job gathering and maintaining mods. It's the same fear that anyone should have when all of their eggs are effectively in one basket (excluding the wayback machine).

The still active old school modder ABitOfTaste (ABOT) gets a great deal credit for creating an enormous index site for both sites to make it fairly easy to download mod under the domain https://modlist.altervista.org/mmh which has put every single mod from both of Fliggerty's domains, in the form of WayBack Machine links all into a gigantic spreadsheet that you can rearrange by the top rows. This has mad it enormously easier to gather mods by Category.

The reliance on Wayback Machine is metaphorically the last line before those mods are vanquished. If something ever happened to the wayback machine, many thousands of mods would be lost, possibly permanently.

[Current Preservation Aims]

Birthsigns - Complete - 101 mods
Books - Complete - 117 mods
Quest - Complete - 296 mods
Models and Textures - Work in Progress - 224 mods at the time of writing

Even more categories will be preserved in due time.

[What if Fliggerty starts modhistory.com back up again?]

That would be a huge relief! But I will still continue my preservation goals anyways. Something Something Eggs, Something Something Basket.
