Darker night-time settings for OpenMW.

2.0 UPDATE:

Version 2.0 is here!

Nights are now properly dark with more dynamic contrast and a look that is both closer to vanilla in color and more immersive.

+ To balance things out, an ESP is provided (designed for use with True Lights & Darkness) which makes torches and lanterns brighter.

+ Along with an ESP for balancing things out are some additional tweaks for your openmw.cfg and settings.cfg files

+ The ESP also tweaks a few colors of lights in TL&D to more closely resemble their vanilla counterparts. For example, some candles were changed from orange/yellow to pure white in TL&D which didn't look as nice IMO, and some colored candles that were previously made pretty intense and zany in TL&D have been toned back a little.

Note: Please ignore the backup file in this version and make your own, I got it from one of the OpenMW pages but it must be out of date as some things are missing or wrong. I will fix in future versions.

1.1 UPDATE! (I did a baad thing):

In an attempt to make this mod easier to install, I included the blizzard settings even though they are unchanged, unfortunately I somehow failed to include all of them in the text document. If you followed the installation instructions below when installing this mod prior to version 1.1, you would have ended up with blizzards being incredibly heavy to the point of being blinding and having a severe impact on FPS.

After writing this I have corrected the problem in the download but here are ALL of the default blizzard settings for people in need of them:

fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Cloud_Texture,Tx_BM_Sky_Blizzard.tga
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Clouds_Maximum_Percent,1.0
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Transition_Delta,.030
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Sky_Sunrise_Color,091,099,106
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Sky_Day_Color,121,133,145
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Sky_Sunset_Color,108,115,121
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Sky_Night_Color,027,029,031
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Fog_Sunrise_Color,091,099,106
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Fog_Day_Color,121,133,145
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Fog_Sunset_Color,108,115,121
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Fog_Night_Color,021,024,028
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Ambient_Sunrise_Color,084,088,092
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Ambient_Day_Color,093,096,105
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Ambient_Sunset_Color,083,077,075
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Ambient_Night_Color,053,062,070
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Sun_Sunrise_Color,114,128,146
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Sun_Day_Color,163,169,183
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Sun_Sunset_Color,106,114,136
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Sun_Night_Color,057,066,074
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Sun_Disc_Sunset_Color,128,128,128
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Land_Fog_Day_Depth,2.8
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Land_Fog_Night_Depth,3.0
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Wind_Speed,.9
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Cloud_Speed,7.5
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Glare_View,0
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Ambient_Loop_Sound_ID,BM Blizzard
fallback=Weather_Blizzard_Storm_Threshold,.50

My sincerest apologies to anyone who's been affected by my mistake!

Description

Fargoth17 Commented on True Lights and Darkness: "Caves and stuff is fine, but outside is still bright at night?? Any ideas?"

At first I thought there would be little to be done, I was wrong.

After a lot of fine-tuning, going in and out of the game, testing different weathers, times and regions, I think I have come up with something that darkens the outside nights in a subtle way that's not too dark and disorienting but still helps to make nights a little scarier, more realistic and arguably prettier in some cases, people's tastes and monitors will vary of course.

Features

- openmw.cfg file settings to make Morrowind's nights darker.
- An optional (very subtle) pinker clear sky texture available with 1.1 to add a touch of extra magic to clear nights

Installation

- Find your openmw.cfg file. Usually found under: Documents\My Games\OpenMW
- Create a backup of this file
- In the original, delete everything between these lines:

fallback=Weather_Clear_Transition_Delta,.015

fallback=Moons_Secunda_Size,40

- Between them, paste the contents of the TrueNights&Darkness.txt file

In order to try the optional pinker clear nights sky:

- Paste the unzipped the optional folder into the place where you keep your mods (give it a catchy name)

- Point your cfg file at it with data=

- Or (if you're not using OpenMW or just prefer to do things the original way) backup your Tx_Sky_Clear.dds file if you have it in Data Files\Textures and paste the Tx_Sky_Clear.dds file from this mod into Data Files\Textures

Recommendations

True Lights and Darkness with the following openmw.cfg file settings:

fallback=LightAttenuation_UseConstant,1
fallback=LightAttenuation_ConstantValue,0.382
fallback=LightAttenuation_UseLinear,1
fallback=LightAttenuation_LinearMethod,1
fallback=LightAttenuation_LinearValue,1
fallback=LightAttenuation_LinearRadiusMult,1.0
fallback=LightAttenuation_UseQuadratic,1
fallback=LightAttenuation_QuadraticMethod,2
fallback=LightAttenuation_QuadraticValue,2.619
fallback=LightAttenuation_QuadraticRadiusMult,1.0
fallback=LightAttenuation_OutQuadInLin,0

**BACKUP SETTINGS**
fallback=LightAttenuation_UseConstant,0
fallback=LightAttenuation_ConstantValue,0.0
fallback=LightAttenuation_UseLinear,1
fallback=LightAttenuation_LinearMethod,1
fallback=LightAttenuation_LinearValue,3.0
fallback=LightAttenuation_LinearRadiusMult,1.0
fallback=LightAttenuation_UseQuadratic,0
fallback=LightAttenuation_QuadraticMethod,2
fallback=LightAttenuation_QuadraticValue,16.0
fallback=LightAttenuation_QuadraticRadiusMult,1.0
fallback=LightAttenuation_OutQuadInLin,0

Requirements

- This mod's settings changes are for OpenMW, read here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Morrowind/comments/5t7mga/is_there_a_way_for_the_nights_to_be_slightly/

for advice on doing something similar with the vanilla engine. It's possible that the settings for this mod would work in the Vanilla Morrowind.ini file too, if anyone fancied testing that and letting me know, that would be much appreciated. Just back up your ini file first!

- If you have any issues using this without the Bloodmoon expansion, please let me know.
