Major update!

This update is a huge step from the previous versions. All textures were retouched for a higher quality standard and tons of new textures and maps were added. Now at least 95% of terrain textures should be covered, Solstheim not included. I put way too much time into this -- Enjoy!

About

Morrowind VanillaPlus textures is not supposed to be eye-candy but to retrain the charm of the original. So if you don't see much of an improvement on the screenshots that's actually a good thing! You will definitely see it in-game.

When I came back to the world of Morrowind recently, the first thing that caught my eye were the terrible ground textures. Instead of gras you get a stretched mess of green and brown pixels. I really like the visual aesthetics of Morrowind, so I tried to find a mod that fixed that problem for me. Unfortunatelly all texture sets I found were either  changing the look drastically or were upscales of the original with filters applied to them.

So I decided to do it myself. After having some quick success with ground
textures I started to experiment with normalmaps.

Goals

  • Strictly keeping the style of vanilla and add detail if necessary.
  • Match the exact same color and saturation, as well as the general brightness. It should blend in perfectly with the other Bethesda textures for a seamless experience.
  • The texture maps are supposed to give a natural look and are designed according to the material they represent. Terrain looks different under different weather conditions.
  • Textures don't have to be over 1K. A too high level of detail takes the focus away from the gameplay.
  • Performance minded. Textures are only as big as they have to be according to the data they provide.

Future

Solstheim and Mournhold textures are not featured. Since I am currently using Morrowind Rebirth which makes use of Vurts trees, Vanilla trees are still untouched. Also Imperial building were improved just a bit, some original textures there should be remade. I will be working on that in the future.

Bugs

Specular maps on top of normalmaps could look much better if they were rendered a bit differently in openMW. This is not a bug, but specular maps look a lot better without normalmaps so there is some potential for improvement here.

Only if you want to use the extra maps for armor, clothes and weapons:
The glowing effect on enchanted items looks weird (when applied to normalmaps) so I had to take it out. If you still want to try it, just delete the /magicitems folder in your /Data Files/Textures.

Installation

Put the extracted /Textures folder into your Morrowind /Data Files folder.

If you wish for additional textures, drag the .dds files from the other extracted folders into your /Data Files/Textures folder.

No plugins or anything, this is pure textures.

Mac users make sure not to overwrite your whole Textures folder but to merge folders: Drag your extracted Textures folder into your /Data Files while holding alt (⎇) key. If asked merge folders.

If you use openMW make sure your settings.cfg features these lines

[Shaders]
auto use object normal maps = true
auto use object specular maps = true
auto use terrain normal maps = true
auto use terrain specular maps = true
normal map pattern = _n
specular map pattern = _spec

Compatibility

This is compatible with anything. Made for openMW but works with the original engine.
If you don't use openMW just install the Purist Edition.

Also VanillaPlus is plugin-less, no ESP or ESM.

Credits & Thanks

Thank you to everyone involved in the development of openMW, I have been a huge fan for a long time. I made these textures to give something back to the community.

Shoutouts to João „katsukagi“ Paulo for sharing his work online, it is incredible how creative he is and I learned a lot from his maps. Thank you also for giving it such an open license. His work is somewhere mixed into the VanillaPlus textures. Same goes for SGMonkey, his pack features interesting patterns, some are carefully mixed in aswell.

Screenshots were taken using Morrowind Rebirth by Johan Rosen.
