You are right but I explictily stated in the description that the problems with the mesh get apparent because of high-res replacers in the first place. The leaf textures originally included in Ultimate Textures, Visual Pack and other texture packs have a nice leaf structure that gets entirely lost on the vanilla meshes. This can be used with vanilla textures and there will also be small improvements, on the stem in particular, but it is not made to be used with them.
If I had used vanilla textures in the comparison shot, you would not have seen a real difference.
