I. INTRODUCTION
====================================================

Thank you for downloading Tamriel Rebuilt!

Tamriel Rebuilt is a large fan project for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. When Bethesda Softworks, the developers of the Elder Scrolls series, started designing the game towards the end of the 1990s, the original intent was to include all of the eponymous country's landmass in the game. As it turned out, this was too large a task and the scope was reduced to Morrowind's central volcanic island, Vvardenfell. Even so, the result was an enormous, colorful world that many, in our project and beyond, still consider one of their most memorable game experiences.

Our aim is to pick up where Bethesda left off: by creating the rest of its mainland, we are building Morrowind as it could have been, in a way that is truthful to the vision of the original developers. Rather than just providing a game world several times the size of the original, we want that world's vistas, stories and people to be every inch as captivating as its example.

Tamriel Rebuilt is a long-term project. What took a team of paid, full-time developers several years obviously takes a group of volunteers longer. On the other hand we also have the luxury of not being bound by the same temporal and budgetary constraints that a game studio is subject to, which means we are free to undertake some things that would otherwise never become reality.

There is much to be created, much to be expanded and improved upon, and for that we need all the help we can get. If you love Morrowind and its world, if you are interested in the creation of mods or games, or if you just want a creative outlet in a lively online community, consider taking a look at how to join the project.
We hope you enjoy our creation!

-The Tamriel Rebuilt Team

====================================================
II INSTALLATION
====================================================

Tamriel Rebuilt can be installed on either the original Morrowind engine (vanilla) or OpenMW. Depending on your choice, follow the corresponding section below.

====================================================
IIa VANILLA MORROWIND
====================================================
----------------------------
i. Requirements
----------------------------
Before installing Tamriel Rebuilt, please ensure you have installed the latest version of Morrowind (v 1.6820), including both Tribunal and Bloodmoon. You also need Tamriel_Data version 7.1 or later. The Morrowind Code Patch is recommended. No other plug-ins are required.

----------------------------
ii. Install Process
----------------------------
Tamriel Rebuilt comes packaged in the BAIN format -- a folder structure designed to be automatically parsed by the mod managers. As such, you may choose to install the mod using Wrye Mash (https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/45439/). However, beginners to Elder Scrolls modding may have an easier time installing manually.

To do so, simply open the downloaded .7z file using 7-zip, enter the directory '00 Core' and move/extract TR_Mainland.esm to your Morrowind 'Data Files' directiory. You will find this directory inside the main Morrowind install directory that contains the .exe file.

----------------------------
iii. Registering Game BSA
----------------------------
If this is your first time installing Tamriel Rebuilt, you will need to register the BSA files that come with Tamriel_Data. Find the Morrowind.ini file in the game directory (not the 'Data Files' directory, but where the .exe file is) and open it in any text editor. Search for the [Archives] section of the INI, where you should see a list of registered game archives from the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions. You must add these lines below the list of archives:

Archive 2=PT_Data.bsa
Archive 3=TR_Data.bsa

with the Archive number being the next available number in the list. In most cases it will be 2. Once that is complete, save and close the file. You only need to do this once.

NOTE: If you are using Mod Organizer 2, these lines won't register. Instead, see the applicable section here: https://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/about/frequently-asked-questions/bsa

----------------------------
iv. Enabling Game Files
----------------------------
The final step before playing the new content is to ensure that the data files are enabled in Morrowind's Launcher. Simply launch the program and ensure the Tamriel_Data.esm and TR_Mainland.esm are ticked.

----------------------------
v. Optional Files
----------------------------
You don't need the following files to play, but some are recommended. You can find them in other folders of the downloaded .7z file. To install, move them into your Morrowind 'Data Files' directory and enable them in the Morrowind Launcher.

RECOMMENDED:

- TR_Factions.esp (in '01 Faction Integration'): better integrates the Vvardenfell factions into the mainland factions.

- TR_Travels.esp (in '03 Travel Network for Core and Vvardenfell'): provides easy access to the mainland through standard travel providers on Vvardenfell.

OPTIONAL:

- TR_Preview.esp (in '02 Preview content'): adds work-in-progress areas that you can visit for a sneak peak at our upcoming content (you will not yet find npcs or quests in most of these areas). Use this with TR_Travels_(Preview_and_Mainland).esp (in '03 Travel Network for Core, Preview, and Vvardenfell') instead of TR_Travels.esp. Beware that this file will change drastically between Tamriel Rebuilt releases and may result in your saves being incompatible with future updates. As such, we recommend using a different save for this file.

- TR_OldTravels.esp (in '04 Patch for Abot's Travel Mod'): compatibility patch for Abot's Travels mod.

----------------------------
v. Updating Save Games (if using existing save with a previous version of TR):
----------------------------
If you are updating Tamriel Rebuilt, and intend on resuming play using an existing save-game, you must first run the file patcher contained in Tamriel_Data download and then undertake the additional steps outlined here (http://wiki.theassimilationlab.com/mmw/Wrye_Mash#Using_an_Updated_Versio...) to resolve any potential errors when using an old save-game on a newer version of Tamriel Rebuilt. Please note, you will need to download and install the Wyre Mash utility to clean and repair your savegame using the method above as well as a Java Runtime Engine to use the file patcher.

====================================================
IIb OPENMW
====================================================

----------------------------
i. Requirements
----------------------------
Before installing Tamriel Rebuilt, please ensure you have the latest version of OpenMW with a working instance of Morrowind, Tribunal and Bloodmoon. Tamriel Rebuilt requires Tamriel_Data version 7.1 or later. No other plug-ins are required.

----------------------------
ii. Install Process
----------------------------
Tamriel Rebuilt comes packaged in the BAIN format -- a folder structure designed to be automatically parsed by the mod manager Wrye Mash. However, support for OpenMW is still work-in-progress for that program. Instead, install the mod manually:

1. Create a new directory for Tamriel Rebuilt somewhere on your computer.
2. Open the downloaded .7z file using 7-zip.
3. Enter the directory '00 Core' and move/extract TR_Mainland.esm to the directory you just made.
4. You need to register the folders of both Tamriel Data and Tamriel Rebuilt inside openmw.cfg. Locate this file at $HOME/.config/openmw (Linux), $HOME/Library/Preferences/openmw (MacOS), or C:\Users\\Documents\My Games\OpenMW (Windows).
5. Search the file for the last line containing 'data=', and add the following lines below:

data="Tamriel_Data"
data="Tamriel Rebuilt"

replacing '' with the filepath where your Tamriel_Data and Tamriel Rebuilt folders are located. The double quotes are mandatory.
6. Save the openmw.cfg file.

(Alternatively, you might be interested in trying Mod Organizer 2, which works with OpenMW using the plugin here: https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/45642)

----------------------------
iii. Registering Game BSA
----------------------------
If this is your first time, you will need to register the BSA files that come with Tamriel_Data. To do so, locate your openmw.cfg file (see above), search for the last line containing 'fallback-archive=' and add these lines below:

fallback-archive=TR_Data.bsa
fallback-archive=PT_Data.bsa

Save and close the openmw.cfg file.

----------------------------
iv. Enabling Game Files
----------------------------
The final step before playing the new content is to ensure that the data files are enabled in OpenMW's Launcher. Simply launch the program, navigate to the 'Data Files' tab and ensure Tamriel_Data.esm and TR_Mainland.esm are ticked.

----------------------------
v. Optional Files
----------------------------
You don't need the following files to play, but some are recommended. You can find them in other folders of the downloaded .7z file. To install, move them into the Tamriel Rebuilt directory you made and enable them in the OpenMW Launcher.

----------------------------
vi. Updating Save Games (if using existing save with a previous version of TR):
----------------------------
If you are updating Tamriel Rebuilt, and intend on resuming play using an existing save-game, we recommend you travel to Vvardenfell and save before updating. OpenMW will automatically clean your save file for outdated data from the old version of the mod.

====================================================
III. PLAYING TAMRIEL REBUILT
====================================================

All Tamriel Rebuilt content will be accessible the moment you load a saved game, or start a new game. If you have the TR_Preview.esp file and/or TR_Travels.esp file enabled, it is highly recommended you backup your save game.

----------------------------
i. Accessing the Landmass
----------------------------
Most of our playable content can be found on the peninsular Mainland east of Vvardenfell. With the TR_Travels.esp file loaded, you can cross the Inner Sea by boat from many ports, and via Guild Guide from Vivec. If the file is not loaded, the only ways to access the new content is to swim east of Vvardenfell. You can also fast-travel to Sadrith Mora, then cast an Almsivi Intervention spell, which will send you to the temple in Ranyon-rhun.

If you have TR_Preview enabled, you can also access the Mainland south and west of Vvardenfell, though these areas are generally incomplete.

Since the 1512 release, you can also have a variety of fast travel options to access the Mainland, though travel routes are still in alpha and subject to change.

====================================================
IV. KNOWN ISSUES AND INCOMPATIBILITIES
====================================================

----------------------------
i. Known Bugs
----------------------------
As Tamriel Rebuilt is a work-in-progress, be aware that there will be bugs and inconsistencies in our content, especially with much of it being made before our current standards. Here is a short list of the main bugs.

Map Cutoff & Crashes: Users playing on the vanilla game engine may notice that with Tamriel Rebuilt content installed, the map cuts off abruptly at the edges. This is an in-game engine limitation of the world map. The only remedy to this is to install the Morrowind Code Patch and enable the Tamriel Rebuilt Map Fix. Doing so also fixes the frequent crashes that may occur when exploring distant regions.

Landscape and other Inconsistencies: Much of the main release was made many years ago, before planning standards were put in place. Thus, a lot of our older content may be stylistically inconsistent with content that was made more recently. We will address this in future updates.

Incomplete Questlines: The Telvanni and Temple questlines were early creations and are incomplete. There are no plans to finish them until our landmass is planned.

Unfinished Landmass: As of the 15.10 release, we have chosen to include the unfinished heightmap of our southern lands, as well as the now-scrapped iteration of Almalexia. Both these inclusions are meant as a treat for players, and not meant for actual beta-testing. There will be serious bugs, and even instances where these areas will be unplayable. Please do not report any bugs in these areas, as they are not officially supported as part of the Preview release.

Low FPS: Some of our older areas or assets were created with very little regard to playability and optimization. As a result, areas such as Old Ebonheart, Akamora, and the Lan Orethan forest may suffer steep framedrops. While several changes have been made to models and areas, we plan to continue optimizing these areas and assets.

----------------------------
ii. Known Incompatibilities
----------------------------
While we recognize that there are many creations from the mod community, Tamriel Rebuilt's expansion of the base game will result in inevitable incompatibilities, mostly for landmasses that occupy the same area as Morrowind's mainland. We have compiled a list of these user-made modifications for your reference. If you wish to play these modifications alongside Tamriel Rebuilt, you will need to use a utility called TESFaith to move the landmasses manually. We unfortunately cannot offer support for this method, though there are other resources in the community that can help.

Landmasses that conflict with the TR_Mainland (note, some may already have been moved to work with TR):
The Goblin Lab
N'Dib's Twilight
Inferno's Island
Korobal Island
Island Of Tusar
Hawkfir Island
Tree Of Life
The Black Mill
Morrowland
Booty Island
Moon's Spawn
Black Marsh
Darkshroud Keep
Journey's End
Snakebitten's Island
Bloody Oath
Roman City of Theopolis
Rafer: Sands of an Era
Lilligue Island
Helios Keep
Isengard
Legend of Chemua
Tel Scelestus

Landmasses that conflict with TR_Preview (and will eventually conflict with TR's main release):
Silgrad Tower
Wizard's Island
BYG
Annastia
Velidon
Dulsya
Five Toes
Havish
Great Shoals
Stagenau Isle
Western Island

We will continue to update this list should we become aware of any further incompatibilities with our landmass. If you find an instance of conflict, please report it to us either on our official thread, or our bug forum.

----------------------------
iii. MGSO, Morrowind Rebirth, and Replacer Conflicts
----------------------------
The Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul (MGSO), a fairly popular, if outdated, graphics overhaul compilation is often used with Tamriel Rebuilt. For the most part, the two can be used alongside each other, however, particular replacers in that pack may cause placement errors in areas where patches have not been made to remedy these issues. The most notable of these is the On The Rocks modification, which is known to cause severe placement issues in our areas, often blocking cave entrances and roads. An outdated patch by Slartibartfast exists for a 2012 version of TR; there is currently no known updated version of this patch.

Similar, conflicts exist between Tamriel Rebuilt and Morrowind Rebirth (MR), a popular overhaul for Vvardenfell and Solstheim. Not only does MR overwrite models intended with a new placement and remodeled landscape, sometimes causing conflicts with TR's placement which is intended for the original model, it also includes a fairly complete rebalancing of Morrowind items, spells, and foes, making TR's content overpowered by comparison.
While it is quite possible to play Morrowind Rebirth together with Tamriel Rebuilt without encountering game-breaking problems, it is not recommended by MR's author for the same reasons.

Another conflicting modification is the Mountainous Red Mountain replacer which also causes major placement issues, especially in the Velothi Mountains. A workaround can be found here (http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?p=323469#323469) and an alternative version of Mountainous Red Mountain can be found here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/6rakhzt9c0d7epx/MRM-Non%20Pointy.rar).

There is also the fact that as we progress further on, our dependency on vanilla assets will decrease. Popular replacer mods will not affect unique TR assets, which will be encountered more frequently in our newer areas.

====================================================
V. TROUBLESHOOTING
====================================================

----------------------------
i. Common Issues
----------------------------
While playing Tamriel Rebuilt, you may run into several problems. These are listed below.

Missing Resources: Users who fail to register the BSA correctly will often find that loading Tamriel Rebuilt will result in a lot of "missing meshes/animation" error dialog messages popping up on load, some even fatal. Please double-check your Morrowind.ini file to ensure our Data Archive is registered properly, otherwise the game won't load.

Windows Vista and above: Users who play Morrowind on operating systems later than Windows Vista may find that despite their efforts, the game will still churn out missing mesh errors. This is a result of the User Account Controls that were introduced in these versions of Windows. Either disable UAC through the Control Panel, or install the game in a directory other than Program Files.

----------------------------
ii.Reporting Bugs
----------------------------
As Tamriel Rebuilt is a work-in-progress, it is inevitable that one will discover bugs along the way. These can range from small issues such as placement errors (floating objects, bleeding objects), to more serious problems like broken quests, dialogue, and land tears. It is crucial to report these to us so that they may be fixed in subsequent updates.

It is recommended that you use the game's built-in beta comment feature to report bugs. You must first define the Beta Comment file in your Morrowind.ini by searching for Beta Comment File= and simply type in the name of the text file after the = sign. When you find a bug in game, open the console using the (~) key, click on the object in question, and type

bc "describe the bug"

... which will dump the output and object coordinates to the text file defined above. Repeat this procedure whenever you encounter a bug. You may then open the text file afterwards and copy its contents when you file a bug report, either on our forums, or our official thread on the Elder Scrolls forum.

====================================================
VI. PROJECT STATUS [February 2020]
====================================================
As of February 2020, the latest build of Tamriel Rebuilt is version 20.02, a bugfix released on the 28th. Tamriel Rebuilt version 19.12 "Aanthirin", our last content release, adds the Aanthirin region with the city of Almas Thirr and more than 60 quests to TR_Mainland.

Our next releases will mainly focus on bugfixing and the slow drive south and west, towards the regions of Roth-Roryn, Ascadian Bluffs, Thirr Valley, and Deshaan Plains.

====================================================
VI. CREDITS & DISCLAIMER
====================================================

Making Morrowind's vision come to life is a colossal effort, undertaken by many fans over the course of Tamriel Rebuilts twelve years in existence. We would like to thank all those developers, past and present for their contributions to this project.
