  Now that you mention it, the developers also based the cacodemon from the original game from 1993 on existing artwork for the beholder, as shown here:

  There is a SUPER mod that adds monsters in MW and one of them is a Beholder. Best looking Beholder I have ever seen!

Last time I recall, cacodemons spat ball lightning/plasma, instead of poison like they do in the photo.
