Morrowind

I have written a brief overview of the mod, but it is clear there is still confusion about what this mod does on a technical level. So, this article will detail all the nitty-gritty of this mod.

Philosophy
The philosophy of this mod is thus: “Avoid overwriting newer content where possible”. However, I couldn’t avoid overwriting some pieces of dialogue. This includes any and every topic about Bal Oyra, as well as Fitz-Fitz saying that Silneil the Maven offers jobs too. Every other newer content was left alone - this includes but is not limited to Bal Oyra village, Firewatch and Helnim.

Bal Oyra
Bal Oyra used to be an Imperial town in the old releases. Then, Embers of Empire (EoE) repurposed almost all of the town interiors and spread them across the new settlement of Nivalis, as well as Firewatch. The result was that Bal Oyra remained a Dunmer hamlet instead.

TROMBOBE restores Bal Oyra as an Imperial town, but some hard decisions needed to be made to make the old town play nice with EoE:

  • As the interiors were already repurposed elsewhere, I had to change each old town interior to include new NPCs exclusive to this mod. The two interiors that were never brought over to EoE in any shape or form - they were left intact exactly as in the old releases. The exception was Ilnori. He’s back as a baker, so the Nivalis shipmaster was replaced by a new NPC with the exact same travel routes.
  • Any cut quests that I restored - they had to be moved to Nivalis. For example, Lish has a new quest and moving him back to Bal Oyra could introduce a whole lot of issues. Which would go against the philosophy of this mod.
  • The relay has a new guild guide and this still connects with Firewatch. Now, it also links with Nivalis because why not?

I also put some cobblestones to give the Bal Oyra town a much-needed facelift.

Telvanni Library
EoE also replaced this place with another tower complex. The interiors were restored exactly as they were, with new NPCs to replace the repurposed old NPCs in EoE. And because there’s only one entrance, the forcefield in the Eastern Tower was deleted.

The tower entrance was relocated close to the new tower complex. The new tower wasn’t touched in any shape or form.

Thieves Guild quests
Silneil the Maven used to offer quests in the old releases, but in EoE, Fitz-Fitz offers only one old quest and the rest are brand new. Putting the rest of the old quests under the knife.

What ended up happening in TROMBOBE is this:

  • The brandy quest is already there in EoE under Fitz-Fitz. No point in restoring it.
  • The robe, the book and the slave quests were restored exactly as they were. Silneil still exists as an NPC, so she offers them as before. Her dialogue was changed to say that Fitz-Fitz offers quests too, as well as Fitz-Fitz saying that Silneil offers jobs as well.
  • Herne’s Soul was considered to be restored at one point. But given that EoE completely guts this concept out, except for one small side quest, restoring the quest would lead to many issues. I would have to figure out how to edit the Mages Guild questline to force include Herne’s Soul and then the new quest Soul Swipe would need to be edited drastically too. TROMBOBE is already controversial enough as it is. I don’t want to kick the hornet’s nest any further by even daring to risk this restoration.

Aside from the slight dialogue edits, Fitz-Fitz was left alone.

Imperial Cult quests:
These Bal Oyra quests were never restored in Nivalis in EoE. So, I restored every non-repurposed quest, but changed the location to Nivalis instead.

Passion’s Call and The Duchess:
Pre EoE, there was a shipwreck called The Duchess with a hilarious book called Passion’s Call and a warning note. However, EoE scraps all of it entirely. TROMBOBE restores it all as it was.

Considering it was always an independent entity, there would be no harm in restoring it as-is.

Other considered but scrapped adaptations:
I did consider restoring more things, which ended up never being implemented:

  • The Fighter’s Guild in Firewatch has all of my favourite quests, so there was never a point in restoring anything.
  • I did like Herne’s Soul in the Firewatch Mages Guild, but as per before, it was gutted from everything bar one side quest. So, not worth it.
  • I did consider bringing over some good Helnim Thieves Guild quests, but upon further reflection, I figured that it was all bad and deserved to die in a dumpster.
Does this break TR?
I put my hand on my heart when I say this mod was very carefully created with compatibility in mind. Things have not been restored willy-nilly. Instead, it was a lot of work and much thinking to ensure the older content plays nice with EoE. Furthermore, I tested everything in this mod and made sure that nothing broke.

However, while TROMBOBE works now, it is possible things may change in the future. If I find that it’s no longer possible to make everything work well, I will take down the mod for good.
