About this mod

This mod seeks to remove all forms of damage reduction and boosting that Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries adds.

Permissions and credits
Goals:

  • "Even out" damage. Any "artificial" (highly subjective) forms of damage reduction (DR) or damage buffs (DB) will be discarded. An elite pilot and a green pilot taking an AC/20 to the face should take the same damage.
  • Make combat as bit more visceral. An AC/20 to a locust should be deathly. Not a tickle. This makes combat (at least to me) much more satisfying.

Accomplishments so far:

  • Previously, enemy Mech pilots had the following damage resistance based on type: Green 5%, Regular 10%, Veteran 25%, Elite and Boss 40%. These are all now 0%. (note only mechs got this benefit)
  • The pilot skills, Gunnery and Shielding, are now disabled. Gunnery provided up to 20% bonus damage, while shielding negated 30%. For enemy pilots this makes no difference as they cannot use those skills, but for friendly pilots and yourself this does have a big impact. Your pilots are no longer "special" with regards to damage. Note that as a side-effect, all pilots in Instant Action also have these disabled. (Specifically, I only disabled GunnerySubskillDamageBonus, so any other effects Gunnery has are left in-tact)


Missing pieces:

  • I cannot for the life of me figure out Evasion. We know it also works as damage reduction versus the player, and we know that moving perpendicular and fast makes it more effective. However, I need to know what UASSET to change to remove this effect from the player. I've seen some curves but it's unclear how it works. I don't want to accidentally affect AI vs AI evasion bonuses, which I think are fair.

Concessions:

  • Pilot skill level is less worthwhile to search for now, and there's less meaning to pilot growth. I know.
  • This mod is not necessarily balanced for a vanilla playthrough. Because yourself and all friendly units are much squishier, and only high-skill enemy pilots will be noticeably less durable, you may find yourself destroyed very quickly. I highly recommend pairing this mod with something that reduces enemy spawns, like Better Spawns or future mods that reduce the shear amount of incoming fire.
  • PGI was not "dumb" to add these mechanics. Their goals were obvious from a game development standpoint and these changes make sense for what they wanted to accomplish. However, despite this, I disagree with the design decisions here and they leave a sour taste in my mouth as a player.
  • Enemy ground and air units do not get any benefits as far as I am aware, so fights with many of them is relatively speaking more difficult.
