About this mod

Enables dual-language subtitles and UI, pauses dialogue after each spoken line.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
This mod combines the game's existing translations to create dual-language translations.  It's intended for language learners, like me, and those who need help understanding the English dialogue.

Dual Language Text

Available Languages in LE1

EN - English
DE - Deutsch (German)
FR - Français (French)
IT - Italiano (Italian)
PL - Polski (Polish)
RU - Pусский (Russian)
ES - Español (Spanish) - text only
JA - 日本語 (Japanese) - text only
CZ - Čeština (Czech) - subtitles only
HU - Magyar (Hungarian) - subtitles only

Installation for LE1

The mod files are named according to the target languages:

Dual Language Text - PRIMARY_SECONDARY

  • PRIMARY - This is the language whose text will be replaced.  It is usually the language you chose in the Launcher, but if you enabled the option to force English dialogue, use EN_* mods.  Install only one mod for each primary language at a time.
  • SECONDARY - This is the language that will appear in parentheses after the primary language text.

Install the .7z file using MP3Tweaks Mod Manager

Installation takes a long a time because of the number of files that need to be updated.  PL_* and RU_* mods take twice as long because LE1 includes 2 editions of each.

Verify that your PRIMARY language is enabled in the Launcher and launch the game.  If you only want to add English subtitles and want the UI and item descriptions to stay in your language, try the following:  Launcher language:  non-English, English Voice Over:  Enabled, Install mod:  EN_non-English. (doesn't work for every language, see Known Issues below)

Since subtitles will be much longer than intended, you may want to set your subtitle font size to Small.

Subtitles go by quickly.  To pause the screen, activate the Origin overlay (shift-F1), or try the DialoguePauser below

Known Issues

  • The longer text labels don't always fit on the screen.  They may be truncated or displayed on top of other labels.
  • LE1 stores subtitle text separately from all other text, but it's not a perfect division.  This means that when using English Voice Over option above, most but not all of the subtitles will be replaced by the mod.

DialoguePauser (v2)

This mod gives you extra time to study each line of dialogue in conversations.  Conversation scenes will pause automatically after each line of dialogue is spoken.

Installation

  • Extract and copy LE1DialoguePauser.asi into <game folder>\Game\ME1\Binaries\Win64\ASI
  • DELETE any old copies of version 1.x (DialoguePauser.asi, without the "LE1")
  • In ME3Tweaks Mod Manager, open the Mod Management menu, ASI Mod Manager
  • On the Mass Effect LE tab, it will say whether ASI Loader is installed or not installed.  If not installed, click Install Loader
  • LE1DialoguePauser should appear as an unknown ASI mod

Use

Version 2 includes new features developed for LE2.

Automatic (Scroll Lock on) - This mod will pause the game after each line of dialogue is spoken in conversation mode (when you're not able to move Commander Shepard) and for some passive conversations (when you're still free to move).  To enable pausing, turn on the Scroll Lock on your keyboard.

While actors are speaking lines, the status will appear in the upper left corner of the screen.  Periods "..." indicate that dialogue will be paused after the current line is completed.  One period is shown for each remaining second (up to 20 seconds), providing a countdown until the line ends.

When the actor finishes, all character animations will stop.  When you're ready to continue, press any key or click the mouse.

A circle indicator "○" means that a conversation wheel choice will be displayed next, so no pause is necessary to keep the subtitle on the screen.

If no indicator appears, the line will not be paused automatically.  You need to either enable automatic pauses by turning on Scroll Lock, or use the F8 manual pause before the line ends, or review the history afterward.

Manual (F8) - Some cutscenes in LE2 are not constructed as dialogues and can't be automatically paused between lines.  You can manually pause the game at any point by pressing F8.  The indicator will display "F8 Pause" in the upper left corner.  Press F8 again to resume.

Conversation History (H)
 -  If you miss a line of dialogue, the mod keeps a history of the last 8 displayed subtitles.  History display can be turned on or off for either pause screen by pressing H.  The number of subtitles visible depends on the available screen space, the font size, and the length of each line.

Source Code

Known Issues

  • SAVE OFTEN.  An ASI mod is executable code that launches with the game.  Any problems in the mod will likely crash or freeze the game.
  • Cutscenes that don't involve Shepard are usually stored as one long sequence.  There are no pauses in between lines, even though the "..." is displayed.  The text should still be saved in the history.
  • FIXED in 2.0 - Sometime the first line of dialogue is not paused, depending on how the conversation started.
  • FIXED in 2.0 - Pressing space bar to resume after a pause is slightly different than pressing another key.  Usually there is a little bit of animation left to play after the spoken dialogue ends.  Space bar skips this transition and jumps abruptly to the next scene.
  • FIXED in 1.2.1 - Potential crash during scene transitions (e.g. landing on Ilos)
  • FIXED in 1.2 - Space bar needs to be pressed twice to skip dialogue.
  • FIXED in 1.1 - Pause happens long before the voiceover ends in some scenes
  • FIXED in 1.1 - Pauses needlessly before a conversation wheel choice.

Misc

LE2 and LE3

The LE2 version of the mod is published.  LE3 will come at some point in the future.

Credits

Dual Language Text was incredibly easy to make using MP3Tweaks Mod Manager/Legendary Explorer.  The translations are in plain text format, so you can edit them and reapply the mod to your game.
