Monthly Roundup - May 2025

  • Comment
It’s roundup time! We are almost halfway through the year and things aren’t slowing down here.

Today I have more updates on site changes for you. They’ll all be explained below in a lot more detail, so let’s just get cracking with it.

Game Artwork
You told us that you missed seeing the timeless artwork of Skyrim on the site, a game that’s synonymous with the growth of Nexus Mods. It has returned. We also wanted to celebrate the huge variety of other game communities on the site so we didn’t just stop at Skyrim. Other games accounted for over 154 million downloads in April alone so we decided to ensure that many other game communities also have pages that feel unique.

To give each game its own distinct identity we’ve used official game artwork across the site. This not only adds visual flair but also helps distinguish game pages from one another. This includes new game tiles, backgrounds and thumbnails.

Some of the artwork changes will feel very new for some of you, particularly with the game tiles, but we feel that using similar artwork to many other popular sites helps to improve the familiarity of Nexus-specific artwork per game. Where possible we've used official artwork from the developers of each game to respect how they want their games to be represented.

So far we’ve added artwork for 120 of the largest games across the site, with more to come. Is your favourite game missing? Please let us know in the comments below and we’ll look into updating it.

Tile Options
We’ve heard your requests for the return of different content display options and it’s something we wanted to explore bringing back. Behind the scenes, we’ve been working on new ways to display mods across the site and earlier in May we rolled out updated tile options for everyone.

You can now choose from three views: standard view, the returning list view, and a brand new compact view -  perfect if you want to see more mods at once with less scrolling.

The new tile options will appear on the following pages:

  • Game homepages
  • Mods listing and full search pages
  • User profiles - Mods tab
  • The logged-in homepage

We hope these give you more flexibility and control over how you browse the site. So why not try them out and see what works best for you!

You can set your preferred view here.

Other Site Changes
  • Time-zone settings: We’ve removed the time-zone settings from the site preference page as they no longer worked as expected. The times you see across the website should now match your browser or device’s local time. If anything looks off, feel free to message a Community Manager.
  • Blocking changes for media pages: Blocking a user from interacting with your images or videos no longer blocks them from viewing the page entirely. Like mods, blocked users can still see your media, but they won’t be able to interact with it by leaving a comment or endorsing it, for example.
  • Mod caching improvements: We’ve made improvements to how changes are cached on mod pages. This should result in fewer errors when you’re uploading media, changelogs or files. If you’re still seeing unexpected error messages after updating your mod, please let a Community Manager know.
  • Default mod search updated: The default sort order when searching for mods is now set to ‘Endorsements’.

Tech Talk
  • QA improvements: Our QA team has been continuing their work on a mod upload and game addition end-to-end test suite. This will help smooth things out as we expand upload features later this year.
  • Updates to the following:
    • Rancher
    • Playwright
    • React
    • Next.js
    • Rails on some of our services
  • Pipeline enhancements: Added Flux to our deployment pipelines.

Eww, Bugs
  • Mod page view stats: Stats from the 19th - 24th May are missing, and we’re unfortunately unable to recover them. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please be assured that we have set up better internal alerting systems to catch issues like this sooner and we’ll be rebuilding the underlying code in the future.
  • Marking mods as obsolete: We fixed a bug so mod authors can once again select the “Obsolete” reasoning when hiding a mod, specifically where choosing a replacement mod didn’t work.
  • Game approvals: We fixed an internal bug that caused slight delays in the approval of new games.
  • Moderated images: Some images that should’ve been hidden were still visible; this has now been fixed.
  • Attachments in Collection comments: You can now correctly attach files to Collection comments again.
  • Collection comment notifications: Clicking on a notification for a Collection comment or reply will now take you directly to that comment or reply.
  • Preferences tag search: Fixed a bug that caused errors when searching for tags to block on the preferences page.
  • Mod page stats: We fixed the numbers not showing correctly.
  • Removed stray “type” filter: We removed an incorrect “type” filter tag from media listing pages.
  • Header image display: The bug causing uploaded header images to not display correctly has been fixed.

As always, keep your feedback coming; we’ll bring more updates next month!

Love it. Seems like the artwork in the background is missing on Granblue Fantasy: Relink.

We've covered around 150 of the games on the site. It's going to be a very long process to get them all updated.

I'll try and remember to look at Granblue Fantasy tomorrow :)

When are you guys tackling the mod name ending in ...
Missed quite a few mods that I would have downloaded if I could read the entire name of it.

If you need more length on the mod names, have you tried the new view options? List view should give the title a lot more space.

It wasn't an issue before the update, so idk why it can't be re-implemented for all views like before

Edit - actually none of the options fix the ... issue.

I just watched the remarkable Unreal Engine work on The Witcher 4 and I am quite impressed with Nanite Foliage. I guess I am going to go back to study more instead of wasting my time here begging to Nexus not to change the layout of the website.

I've very very very much appreciate the return of the favicon variations on the game specific home pages.

As a side, something that would be different for profile pages, instead ofthe default orange would be aaaaaawesome. It's never been that way but Iknow I'd love to see it at least. A special one, that uses Skyrim SE blue, FO green, RDR red and the classic orange with the white would be an interesting twist. A little silly but a 'special' for the members of the community nonetheless, maybe even done as a vote. (just pulling randomness out......at this moment)

The new layout is growing on me but so is moss. Still unsure if I'm past the 50% mark for positive on it yet, if not, it's getting close.

Great continued updates. What's the possibility of adding an "upcoming" section to the monthly roundups as well? Or a "current goals", to give more frequent updates on where things are overall.

It's a good idea, but the winds of change do mean that we won't necessarily be able to say with confidence what is coming next. We've got a rough roadmap internally, but some of the projects get bumped along when new, emergent stuff comes in that is higher priority. Perhaps we'll be able to give a broad overview of what we want to do in the next 6/12/18 months or something.

That's understandable, and I thought might be the case. Calling back to those broad overview posts in later roundups as goals are achieved would be nice. Crossing them off over time. I guess the issue there is making it clear that not everything is a promise though.

I'd love to see a rework/expansion of the whole endorse mod system and then that system being used in Collections too.

I'm also glad that the visual side is better, I'm also glad that yesterday I published the mod, then I set it as hidden and it disappeared, it's not there at all, bravo, I'm really glad that the technical side is being developed  )

Hmm, while it's not really related to the news article. I can see the mod you're talking about is here. If you need help with it, feel free to drop me a PM :)

I really appreciate all the work going into the site over the last few years, especially recently. The improvements are nice, and I look forward to seeing the future of Nexus with the new mod manager. It's all coming along so nicely.

    Thanks to all involved <3
