Knights of the Old Republic

With the recent changes to Nexus allowing mods more all games, and Knight of the Old Republic specifically, I have decided to continue work on my Jedi from the Start mod. The original version of this mod was released on KotORFiles to great success in 2010. Since then I have released two more versions on Deadly Stream. Each version has been a significant leap up from its predecessor, with substantial changes and revisions being placed in each one. 0.9 is no different.

The dialogue in the first version was, quite frankly, terrible. It was grammatically bad and lacked any style or substance. In more recent versions all of the dialogue has been rewritten, and the quality of the mod has improved substantially. The pacing has been improved and, overall, the mods quality has gone up significantly. There was still some dialogue that was very poor though; and, with 0.9, I have sought to fix that. Some changes to the class system, as well as the background story that drives the mod, have been made to accommodate this.

You will start the game as Trask's Padawan and a member of the Jedi Order. Certain changes has to be implemented to account for this. You will no longer be able to select your Jedi Class; instead, your class will be assigned based on your Base Class. If you are a Soldier you will become a Jedi Guardian; a Scout, a Sentinel; and a Scoundrel, a Consular. These changes will streamline the opening section of the game and turn the attack on the Endar Spire into a frantic escape from the ship, rather than the tutorial section which it still, despite my best efforts, feels like.

These changes mean that other elements had to be change to make the story remain consistent with the rest of the game. In previous versions of this mod and other Padawan mods, you would be given Shortsaber; however, in the most recent version, you are now given a standard Lightsaber. This change is mostly for consistency, as no Padawan is ever seen actually using a short saber, and, in the normal game, you create a standard Lightsaber as soon as you become a Padawan. You will still only be able to get one Lightsaber until after Taris (besides Bastila's). This change does make the opening quite a bit more fun, as you no longer have to look like an idiot with a child's saber.

Eh, I'm sorry to say I'm actually quite dissatisfied with some of your choices. To have both force powers and a real lightsaber from the start felt too much, and the shortsaber would've been a better choice imo. I don't know where you get the 'idiot with a child's saber' vibe from. Shortsabers are still just as long as vibroblades and the like, it's just that regular sabers are just quite long by default. You don't fight any padawans in-game, so I don't think it would break cannon to have one on you. This would also make the Jedi Training for satisfying as you'll finally be getting your real saber.

Also to have no flexibility in your choice as Jedi class feels like a huge waste of creativity the vanilla game provided. I loved mixing it up by playing a Soldier Consular or something similarly fun, but now I'm just stuck playing the Sentinel Scout as it's the only real balanced way to play. By far my biggest gripe.

I might uninstall this for my Dark Side playthrough, which is a shame because I LOVE what you did with the Endar Spire and the alternate dialogue to have a much-needed break from the long. bland intro. Thank you for having a go at making a mod available here on Nexus for such an old beloved game. Sorry if this post seems rather harsh. This just seems like a better place to discuss this then in the regular comments section.

    Keep on modding!
