About this image

So I'm pretty confident at JWE2 has seen its final update, and I'm ready to start using mods. But before Igo on the shopping spree, I want to know how to backup my save data in case anything happens. How do I do that? And do I do this before or after I make a park with modded content? I'm new to the whole using mods thing and I'm concerned if something will go wrong or not

Honestly as long as you don't use replacer mods you should be fine without having to make any backups. All mods (outside of replacers) have their own individual folders so uninstalling them if you need to is as simple as just deleting the folder that was added in ovldata by said mod. As long as you make sure to start modded parks as their own separate save file you shouldn't have to worry about any non-modded save files being broken by any mod updates/removals (or a theoretical frontier update if the game ends up having continued development). Also modded save files should be fine to run again to my knowledge if you remove a mod as long as you sell all of the dinos in your park added by the mod (Or buildings/deco). As for where the saves themselves are located I don't personally know, but I'm pretty sure they're linked to the steam cloud (could be 100% wrong on this though).

Edit: Almost forgot to mention, I'd probably only test mods either one at a time or in small batches. That way if one causes a crash/mod conflict or any other issues you can just simply remove the most recently tested one that should be the cause.

I was actually planning to download some replacement mods (most notably, the Jurassic Park Trilogy cosmetic pack, which isn’t modular so you have to download all of the content or none of it. That and some remodels based on personal preference). What do I do for those?

Replacement mods are safe. No need for any backups. You can add and delete them at your own leasure.

Replacement mods are safe yeah, but for those you would want back ups because if you wanted to uninstall a specific one you'd need the original files (or using steam to validate files, but that would remove ALL replacement mods).
For example, if you wanted to download a replacement for Acrocanthosaurus you'd want to go into "ovldata/Content 0/Dinosaurs/Land" and copy the "Acrocanthosaurus" folder to wherever you're gonna store your backups. (Note that some replacers may come with the backups already, making this unnecessary.)

See, guys, that's how you ask questions in the image section:

Ask question, post absolutely ridiculous image.

You dont need backups. Your savegames are fine as long as you leave them as is. If you install mods and save a file with said mods, usually you will need those mods to continue that savegame. You can install new mods and continue modded savegames, but deleting them will most likely corrupt them.

Vanilla savegames are as safe as you can get.

I don't think, that you need to backup your exisiting save files, if you do not mix them with your modded stuff.

    My recommendations:
    - Things can go wrong - Use multiple save files. It is always a good idea, to have a backup.
    - Use dedicated saves for your modded parks. Name them appropriately.
    - Mods can break. Consider your modded parks as expendable.
