About this mod
Subtly modifies certain dinosaur designs to either line up better with how they looked in very early trailers or complement the overall look the game had back then more closely.
- Permissions and credits
Though it isn't a requirement, I recommend using these alongside my Alpha-inspired Terrain mod, which many of these were designed to complement.
Like the environment, a number of the game's dinosaurs look a little different in the final game than they did in the first couple of impressions we got of the game back in mid-late 2017. The majority of them just seem to have been arbitrarily given brighter textures, like the Parasaurolophus and Ankylosaurus, while others were more markedly changed up (and subjectively downgraded), like the Velociraptor having its stripes severely reduced and the Tyrannosaurus getting overly smooth. This mod sets out to try and replicate the looks these dinosaurs had in the first in-game impression we got of them. Funny enough, I think the changes I've made here, even the ones that are simple brightness jobs, also go a pretty long way to make the dinosaurs look more film-accurate!
I write all of this, but a good deal of these are really subtle and probably won't be noticed very much ingame. Either way, hopefully some folks get a kick out of this.
Package 1: The Main Ones
Owing to their placements internally, these ten dinosaurs, eight of which are shown in the first two trailers for the game, seem to have been the first ones implemented. Probably not coincidentally, they are also the dinosaurs that come right out of Jurassic World and were directly provided by ILM.
- Of all of the dinosaurs in this mod, the T. rex is the one that has seen the most drastic changes. It overall has a rougher, scalier look, much less smooth than the final vanilla design. Changes to its matcols have necessitated some changes to its variants. The one that has seen the most extreme changes is its Tundra variant, which has been changed to look more like the greenish-gray-looking tyrannosaur from the cinematic trailer. The Triceratops has gone through a similar process, though nowhere near as stark.
- Though they aren't anywhere near 1:1 with its look in the second trailer, the base Velociraptor skins now have a stripey-er look.
- Changes to the Ankylosaurus, Apatosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Parasaurolophus and Stegosaurus don't go much deeper than their base textures being darkened.
- The Gallimimus and Indominus Rex are admittedly weasel calls, as they aren't shown in either of the first two looks at the game. They've just been darkened.
Package 2: The Other Ones
These dinosaurs were in the base game and were hand-crafted by Frontier or a third party instead of being supplied by ILM themselves. These are all brightness jobs - Camarasaurus, Chungkingosaurus, Corythosaurus, Deinonychus, Edmontosaurus, Huayangosaurus, Kentrosaurus, Nodosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Polacanthus, Sauropelta, Struthiomimus and Tsintaosaurus have been tweaked.
Package 3: Fallen Kingdom
The Carnotaurus, Indoraptor, Sinoceratops and Stygimoloch seem to have been arbitrarily brightened as well. This package mends them; it is worth noting that the base Indoraptor skin has a red/orange lateral stripe for whatever reason, the movie skin with the yellow stripe is the Jungle pattern.
Package 4: Cretaceous Pack
The Carcharodontosaurus, and only the Carcharodontosaurus, has been modified here. Truth be told, basically all of the DLC dinosaurs look fine in regards to brightness to my eye.
Package 5: Return to Jurassic Park
The T. rex is a bit of a mess in regards to its skins - they're oddly affected by the brightness problem and the two 1997 ones are swapped around for some reason. The .fgm files for the two '97 skins have been mended and the skins in general have been tweaked to both address the brightness issue and reflect their pattern icons more. The Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus and Triceratops have their own problems with skin brightness, so they've been modified as well.
Installation
To install, either drag/drop or copy/paste the folders with the word 'Content' in them (Content0, FilmContent, ContentPDLC6, etc., not the _bak folder included with every part) provided in the .zip file to the following directory:
steam\steamapps\common\Jurassic World Evolution\Win64\ovldata\
If prompted to replace anything, either select "yes" or every prompt or "yes to all". Do not rename the folder, do not rename anything in the folder and do not put the folder in any of the folders already inside of ovldata.
Though backups are included with the download, it still won't hurt to backup your existing files.
Known Issues
- I don't know if this is a settings or graphics card issue or what, but at least on my end, the Apatosaurus look WEIRD up close, same deal with the vanilla unmodified Apatosaurus. Hopefully the apatosaurs don't look like a blurry disaster on your ends.
If you find any serious issues that aren't acknowledged above, please do report them; the more descriptive the reports the better, "game crashed please help" isn't something I can go off of very well.
