About this mod

(In my opinion) more visually pleasing AI generated replacements for merc portraits in JA3. Full body images are still vanilla except for the faces (photoshopped)
Not entirely consistent style and probably not lore friendly.

Since I do not like the look of lots of the original portraits in JA3, I decided to have some fun and replace all of them with AI generated ones that more or less resemble the originals, while looking better to my eyes.
I made it for myself but decided to share just in case someone else would also prefer to use these.
They also are not lore friendly probably, missing details or having wrong ages or whatever. Can't say I'm well informed on the merc lore.

I failed with a special one wearing a football helmet, could not get it to a satisfactory level, so that one is still the original.

If you do not like some of them, you can remove some from the MercPortraits folder in the mod files before applying the mod to leave them as their originals.

I recommend you try the V2 GUI Installer Version first.
It's the easiest to use and includes everything.

This mod modifies portrait textures in Packs\UI.hpk

To Update simply follow the instructions again with the new files.
No need to restore a UI.hpk backup first or anything as the old files are simply overridden by the new ones.

Installation instructions (V2 GUI Installer Ver.):

1) Extract download anywhere
2) Launch SurraysPortraitInstaller.exe
3) Press "Set JA3 Directory" to select location of JA3
4) Enable Old Dog faces with checkbox if you like
5) Press "Install"

Installation instructions (V2 Bat Installer Ver.):

1) Extract mod files to main game (not AppData or Documents!) "Jagged Alliance 3\Packs\" folder which contains .hpk files including "UI.hpk"
2) Launch "install_surrays_portraits_V2.bat" inside the \Packs folder
3) If prompted, press "y" followed by Enter to create a backup of UI.hpk

The bat file will use hpk.exe to extract the UI data from UI.hpk, then replace the extracted originals with my new portraits, then repack the UI.hpk file.
You can do this manually as well if you like.

At the end you will be asked whether to delete the unpacked UI folder.
It's about 1.7gb so unless you need that stuff unpacked for something else, I suggest you delete and save that space.

To uninstall you need to restore your backup, or if you lost it or didn't make one, verify file integrity with Steam or equivalent.
