About this mod

This mod gives your character's wing membrane a colorful underside or under- and topside!

Permissions and credits
Instructions

This file has been split into three parts. General read me (you are here), stance version specific, and dye version specific. After reading this, please visit the sections for the specific versions for more information.

Which Version Does What?

The stance version of this mod is the original and gives you pre-colored options to color your wings only with (bottom only or top and bottom). There are 17 individual colors to choose from, each given a preview in the form of their texture in .png form in the same folder as the .zip files.

The dye version is new and still a work in progress. Miiraleuntryr figured out that if you attach a greyscale .png or .agh to a scale texture technique such as the champion head scale loyalty tech, the texture will take on the dye of whatever is on that scale. With her blessing, I built off of her original mod to work with the underwing mod. The dye version allows for multiple combinations of coloring the back fins, head fins, wings top, and wings bottom using in-game dye kits.

Compatibility
The stance version is incompatible with any other stance mods that uses the same stance or any mods that edit the layers.def file. However, anyone with some simple modding knowledge can make stance mods compatible with each other if it is so desired.

The dye version is incompatible with any mods that edit the definition files of the three head scale techniques that the mod uses. Anyone with simple to moderate knowledge of modding can figure out how to make the compatible, however, as well.

Both versions are likely incompatible with any mods that edit the texture space of the wings such as the ripped wings mod.

Future Plans
In the future, I may make versions of this mod that’s compatible with my ripped wings mod. I also will likely edit the original stance version of this mod to make use of existing layers and allow markings to layer over it or under it depending on what a user prefers, allowing more customizability.

Which Texture is Which?

Pebbleskin 1
If you know your texture files, this is skin 00, 05, and 10. If you don’t, this texture is characterized by a few things. Firstly, the scales are very small and akin to the scales of a lizard - roughly circular and tightly fitting. Compared to Pebbleskin 2, these scales are much smaller. Secondly, the frills on the back are all connected and have a second “spike” between the outmost one and the skin. The scales on the brow (above the eye) are not circular. They seemingly overlap and are very small. There are many “sections” of scale on the snout.

Pebbleskin 2
If you know your texture files, this is skin 01, 06, and 11. If not, you can tell this texture apart in a few ways. It’s very similar to Pebbleskin 1 except the roughly circular scales are much larger. The frills on the back do not connect and are all individual triangular fins. The brow has circular scales that are slightly larger than the rest of the ones on the head. There are four “sections” of scale on the snout.

Smooth Scales
These scales are more akin to plates. They’re skin numbers 02, 07, and 12. The texture in general is very smooth, and it’s also probably one of the most common. It has very little contrast, too. Beyond the plate-like scales, a few defining features are that, for one, the wings have extremely noticeable bones. This is the texture that the red crafting trainers use. Also, the forelegs and hindlegs have a unique “plate” texture down them and onto the paws. This texture is the only texture to have stomach plates imbedded in it, as well.

Skin
This texture really can’t be called scales. It’s more akin to skin with some liver spots on it. It’s on skin numbers 03, 08, and 13. Contrast-wise, the texture looks very shiny. Most places have bright white highlights and dark spots nearby, giving it a very reflective “oily” look. Adventure trainers use a green-colored version of this skin. The wing membranes look wrinkly and you can’t really see bones on them. Each wing digit ends in three plates. There are also some “plate” structures on the legs. Overall, the skin looks extremely smooth. Also something to note is that on the body, there’s a sort of scale-like pattern that looks almost like diamond-shaped snake-esque scales, but it’s rather hard to see and mostly looks smooth.

Shiny Scales
This last texture is a bit self-explanatory. It’s on skin numbers 04, 09, and 14 and a colored black-and-brown variation is used by Valkoth, current leader of the Lunus. The scales are mostly very plate-like on the legs, paws, wing arms, and stomach. Around the head and body, the scales are very tiny lizard-like scales that are circular in form. The contrast on this texture is very, very high and makes most characters who use it very, very shiny. You can somewhat see the bone structure on the wings, here, but it’s not as prominent as on the smooth scales.

Stance Version

Installation Instructions

  • Download the mod download called "Stance Version".
  • Navigate to which texture the character you are going to mod has. (Examples are shown in screenshots in the main folder and described above if you don’t know)
  • Choose whether you want the top and bottom of your wings colored, or only the bottom of your wings. Go to the respective folder.
  • Copy and paste the folder of the specific color you want into your \...\Istaria\resources_override\ folder. If you don't know which color you want, open the folder to see the raw colored texture.
  • Restart or run Istaria.
  • (Optional) Delete the original downloaded .zip file and folder.

Instructions to Run Multiple Variations

  • Download and unzip the colors that you want into your resources_override, desktop, or wherever.
  • Rename the “aug_stance_blue.def” to “aug_stance_<COLOR: red, green, lightblue, purple, or orange>.def” on any extra colors. This will make different stances use them.
  • In the new “aug_stance_<color>.def” file, change the bolded word in this string of code: “string texFilename = "underwing.agh"”. It can be any word, but try not to use spaces. Use different names if you’re using 2 extra colors. (You might need to save this to your desktop as a .def and bring it back if you’re doing this in resources_override)
  • In the same folder as your new “aug_stance_<color>.def” file, rename the “underwing.agh” file to the exact same thing you wrote in the definition file.
  • Restart or log into Istaria.

Organisation
Each folder will have the name of its associated texture and then within it three folders.

Bottom Only
The mod folders for if you want that the bottom of your wing is the only part of your wing being changed.

Top and Bottom
The mod folders for if you want that both the top and the bottom are changed.

Dye Version

Download & Installation Instructions

  • Navigate to which texture the character you are going to mod has. (Examples are shown in screenshots and explained above if you don't know)
  • Go into your character's scale texture folder and decide which mask you want to work with - champion, hours of frost, or phoenix.
  • Copy and paste the folder of the specific mask type you want into your \...\Istaria\resources_override\ folder.
  • Restart or run Istaria.
  • (Optional) Delete the original downloaded files.

How It Works

The mod applies a texture to your body via a head scale teched with one of the following masks:

Champion
Phoenix
Hours of Frost / Ice Mask

If there is no dye on the scale, either nothing will show up, including the mask itself, or the original tint of the scale will apply. If there is a dye, everything will show and take on the hue of that dye while the scale is equipped.

If you have basic modding knowledge, you can modify the mod to affect other head scale technique kits or to remove certain parts of the mod you dislike. See the bottom part of here for more information.

Known Issues

Rarely at random and sometimes after typing /purgetex you'll lose the texture on your wings or elsewhere. Simply unequip and requip the scale to fix this.
