About this mod

This swaps the combat inputs of Protego and the Tool Menu (swaps L1 and triangle).
As a result, it also changes the ancient magic finisher from L1+R1 to Triangle+R1 to avoid mapping conflicts.
All other L1 / Triangle inputs remain unchanged, including the spell menus (R2+Triangle/Square/X/O)

Permissions and credits
This should work for both Playstation and Xbox controllers.
As I use a PS5 controller, the description will refer to the Playstation layout.

This is a simple modification of the Input.ini file, which swaps the combat inputs of Protego and the Tool Menu (swaps L1 and triangle).
As a result, it also changes the ancient magic finisher from L1+R1 to Triangle+R1, this is unavoidable to avoid mapping conflicts.
All other L1 / Triangle inputs remain unchanged, including the spell menus (R2 + Triangle/Square/Circle/X).

Note: Holding Triangle will open the radial item menu, but releasing it does not. Tap R1 while selecting your item to close the menu.

To install, unzip the new Input.ini file, and replace the Input.ini file for Hogwarts Legacy (found in Users/Account/Appdata/Local/Hogwarts Legacy/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor)

After replacing the Input.ini file (and before you launch the game), right click the new Input.ini file, go to properties, and make sure the 'Read Only' tick box is checked. It should be, by default, but check anyway.
If it is not read only, the game with simply revert the changed inputs back to the original when it launches.

If you wish to revert the inputs back to default, simply untick the 'Read Only' box as above.

Only issue I've found is after holding triangle to open the item/tool menu, it will remain open after you release triangle. You must tap R1 to close it when selecting an item to use. Don't know why, but it works out rather well since holding triangle and using the right stick at the same time is awkward.

PS: I have not tested this extensively yet. A brief play session in a new game found no conflicts with other inputs, but there may be some. Let me know if you find any. I quickly threw this together because I disliked the default PC controls with a PS5 controller, and I couldn't find an existing mod or way in-game to change the Protego button to L1 without using DS4 or SteamInput (but this also changes the triangle and L1 buttons for spell inputs, so no good there).
I thought I'd upload this in case someone else is looking for a quick fix for the same issue. Hope it helps.

FAQ:
Q: I replaced the input.ini file, but when I start the game, the controls aren't changed?
A: See above. Replace the input.ini file again, and make sure the new input.ini file is set to 'Read Only' after you've put it in the WindowsNoEditor folder, before you launch the game.

Q: I can't close the tool/item menu after holding triangle?
A: Tap R1 while selecting your item with right stick.
