About this mod

A universal overhaul of the lighting in every Halo game that expresses lighting and color in volumes of detail with inspiration from hardware-based ray tracing.

Permissions and credits

Universal RTX or UTX, is the ultimate lighting improvement Reshade for every Halo game currently in MCC. Having spent 3 tiring months with this reshade, I am more than confident that this very last iteration of ray tracing in Halo is nowhere near the ambition that led me to begin my campaign with MCC back in early December. This, being the very last detailed and near-professional Reshade for the MCC that I will make, will contain many effects used in ways that push Reshade to its limits. In addition, the 4 versions of this Reshade include Macabre, Cinematic, Gameplay, and Performance that each has a unique purpose. And because of that, I would like for those who choose to enjoy this mod to know that not everything may work as perfectly as Reshade may have intended. I have provided a list of known issues below but if there is anything I missed, please tell me in the Posts section and I will try to solve your issue when I can get around to it. Knowing that I had so many tried new effects that come with Reshade 4.9.1, you will have to update Reshade to the latest version to prevent unforeseen issues.

SSDO and MXAO will not work on classic Halos.


ReflectiveBumpmapping does not handle bright lights well.

PTGI disappearing at certain close angles.

ADOF causing depth issues during pre-rendered cutscenes.

Anniversary games may instantly darken for a short time because of conflicts with the constantly changing depth buffer.

Rim Light needs to be OFF for classic Halo games (shortcut is "-" on the number pad)

Sidenote - ADOF is meant to blur reloads and up-close objects to emulate real-life depth of field

Universal RTX is separated into 4 different presets with unique purposes for each of them;
  • Yellow checkmarks are the recommended effects for gameplay (except for PTGI)
  • Keyboard shortcuts are on the right side of presets that work for certain situations

Macabre - The absolute highest and most quality-based preset that includes Path Traced Global Illumination and requires hardware much better than a 1050 Ti to run correctly. 

(Recommended) -
The balance between Macabre and Performance that allows for good quality and better performance (does not include PTGI).

Gameplay - A preset meant for multiplayer that prioritizes performance but allows for the benefits of Cinematic.

Performance - The simplest version of URTX without any complex effects

Step 1- Download ReShade (version 4.5.2 or newer)

Step 2 - Run the executable (ReShade_Setup_x.x.x.exe)

- Click "Select Game"

- Navigate to the game install: \steamapps\common\Halo The Master Chief Collection\MCC\Binaries\Win64 
and select MCC-Win64-Shipping.exe

- Select Direct3D 10/11/12

- When asked to install shaders, select "Yes"  I recommend downloading all the available shaders.

Step 3 - Drop the Reshade into this folder: (D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Halo The Master Chief Collection\MCC\Binaries\Win64)
