About this mod

An overhaul of everyone's favorite Dragon Knight. Because Freya deserves better.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
Changelogs
Requires Memoria Engine, Moguri-Compatible
Alternate Fantasy Version requires Alternate Fantasy
Standard Version requires that Alternate Fantasy is not used

This is a project I created because Freya deserves better.

Big thanks to AulusClaudius for picking up maintenance on Dragon Knight Rising for the latest version of Memoria!

Dragon Knight Rising is a revamp of most of Freya's kit, making her a more valuable party member that you'll want to keep around.

Big thanks to Albeoris and all the other contributors to Memoria Engine, as well as to Tirlititi, author of Alternate Fantasy and Hades Workshop for
making silly projects like this possible.

The specific changes included in the mod are detailed below;

Installation

Simply drop the "DragonKnightRising" directory into your main FFIX directory
(<your-steam-library>/steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY IX/)

Then, edit Memoria.ini in the same directory and add "DragonKnightRising" to the front of your mod list at the bottom of the file.  For example, if you were using
Moguri, Alternate Fantasy, and this mod, the end of your file should look like this:

[Mod]
FolderNames="DragonKnightRising", "AlternateFantasy", "MoguriFiles", "MoguriSoundtrack", "MoguriVideo"

If you are using Alternate Fantasy, use the Alternate Fantasy version of Dragon Knight Rising only.  If you are NOT using Alternate Fantasy, use
the Standard version of Dragon Knight Rising only.  (Alternate Fantasy comes highly recommended for second playthroughs!)

Changes

Abilities

Jump
  •  Delay time between Jump and the resulting attack reduced by half.
  •  Enemies hit by the Jump become 15% more likely to be critically hit (non-stacking).

Freya's ATB cannot tick while she's in the air and is emptied upon landing, so she misses a lot of active time that isn't made up for by the 50%
increased damage of the attack. Reducing the wait time should improve this a bit (though Freya must still wait for others' animations to
complete before she can land). The defensive utility of Jump is nice to have, but not very useful in most battles, so the weakness-exploiting
effect provides some nice incentive as well.

Jump (Trance)

  • Command is now called "Leap" to more distinctly convey that it is a different effect.
  • Breaks down enemy defenses, removing any of Protect, Shell, and/or Reflect.
  • Enemies hit become 33% more likely to be critically hit (non-stacking).

Lancer
  • Damage reduced from 120% to 80%
  • Added effect: Heals Freya for 100% damage dealt
  • Restores proportionally more MP (1/16th of damage -> 1/8th of damage)
    25% more MP restored overall.

Intended to give Freya more reliable sustain without replacing Attack or Jump as a primary damage option and to also more closely resemble the
traditional Lancet ability.

Reis's Wind
  • Unchanged

Dragon Breath
  • Removed.  Replaced with "Dragonheart".
  • 8 MP.  Grants Auto-Life to Freya only.

Effectively identical to Alternate Fantasy's Dragon Life, but named more thematically to reference to the Dragoon support ability from FF Tactics

White Draw
  • MP cost reduced slightly (36 -> 32)
  • MP Restoration formula changed
Was: random between 0 and target enemy's level * 2
Now: random between Freya's level * 0.5 and Freya's level * 1.5.
  • Now also damages the target's MP by the same amount.

Being based on the enemy's level and having such a wide random range made White Draw wildly inconsistent, sometimes restoring trivially small
amounts of MP when you needed it most, as well as being very weak when used on enemies below your level.  This should make it much more
reliable and, in conjuction with Lancer, enable Freya to do a much better job of keeping gas in your party's tank.

Luna
  • MP Cost slightly increased (12 -> 16)
  • Can now be cast on a single target or all allies/enemies.

I appreciate that Luna is one of a few similar abilities, like "What's That?" (Blind) and "Night" (Sleep) - however, Berserk lends itself
poorly to that sort of ability, since it both increases incoming damage and reduces your available options.  The additional flexibility of
choosing where to apply it should make it something you might actually consider using.  (Even if it is less unique).

Six Dragons
  • Removed.  Replaced with new ability "Dragon Aegis"
  • MP Cost 40.  Grants Shell status to all allies, prevents all enemies from scoring critical hits.

Six Dragons, you will not be missed.  Wanted to provide a pricier defensivesupport ability and was partially inspired by the similar "Dragon
Shield" from FF9 Unleashed, the anti-mage themes of Lancer and White Draw, and the critical manipulation of the reworked Jump abilities.

Cherry Blossom
  • MP Cost reduced (46 -> 40)
  • Power increased from 150% to 200%

Freya's big flashy damage ability, now strong enough to compete with the other high end damage options. These are the same rebalancing changes included
in Alternate Fantasy, and Dragon Knight Rising retains them, including in the Standard Version.

Dragon Crest
  • Removed, replaced with "Ikari"
  • MP Cost 32.  Physical attack vs. all enemies at 160% power.  Inflicts Trouble.  50% hit rate.
  • Optional Replacement - if you would prefer to keep Dragon Crest, select the "with Dragon Crest" version of your respective install instead.

A final physical attack, and one of the few ways to inflict Trouble.  Ikari is included in Alternate Fantasy, and Dragon Knight Rising ports
it over, including in the Standard Version (unless the alternate Dragon Crest version is chosen).

Ability Availability

  • Dragonheart has been added to Mythril Spear
  • Luna has been added to Moonstone
  • Dragon Shield has been added to Venetia Shield and Shield Armor
  • Dragon's Hair now grants Cherry Blossom.
  • Amount of AP required to learn Dragonheart has been reduced to account for its earlier game placement (205 -> 50)
Known Issues:

  • Lancer doesn't show floating combat text for the restored hp/mp (only the damage).
  • When Luna is single-cast, it does not use Freya's normal unique cast startup animation.  There doesn't seem to be a way to change this.
  • Only the English localization is available.  If you would like to provide a translation, let me know!
