About

Mistbloom adds two entirely new survival mechanics to the game: hunger and sanity. Each is displayed on the HUD with its own gauge similar to HP and Stamina. Both gauges will increase or decrease under specific conditions. Your goal is to keep them from ever depleting, if possible...

Additionally, the mod adds custom items to help you survive, custom perks that interact with the newly introduced mechanics, and additional changes to stamina consumption and restoration. Normal game occurrences like inclement weather will now have a much greater influence on gameplay.

Hunger

Hunger
in Mistbloom is a stat similar to Stamina, in that it depletes as you perform actions (that require stamina). However, unlike Stamina, it also depletes automatically over time.

  • Hunger is a value that ranges from 0 to 100. You start at 100. It does NOT reset daily.
  • Hunger is automatically reduced by 1 every 30 in-game minutes. This means playing a "full day" in-game will drain 40 hunger.
  • Spending stamina reduces hunger by an equivalent amount (one-to-one). For example, spending 1 stamina to water a crop will drain 1 hunger.
  • Consuming food restores hunger based on the item consumed. Cooked meals restores hunger based on the formula [2 * (recipe_stars) * 10]. The more "complex" (the number of stars) a dish has, the more hunger it restores. For all other edible items (forage, crops, etc.) or stamina gains from other sources (soup of the day, fountains, etc.) the hunger restored is based on the formula [2 * stamina_gained].
  • A new cooking recipe and item, Survival Rations, have been added that restores 30 hunger when consumed.

When your hunger reaches zero, Ari will lose 10 HP every 30 in-game minutes. Additionally, spending stamina while at zero hunger will also reduce your HP by the amount of stamina spent.

Sanity
Sanity in Mistbloom is a truly unique stat, in that automatically depletes or restores under specific conditions. Unlike hunger, the rate at which sanity changes is significantly faster.

  • Sanity is a value that ranges from 0 to 100. You start at 100. It DOES reset daily.
  • Sanity is automatically reduced at a rate of 25 every in-game hour. The conditions for automatic sanity loss are if Ari is in the dungeon, outside at night (after 8PM), or outside during inclement weather (without the Rainy Day Outfit custom perk active).
  • Sanity is also reduced when losing HP (taking damage) in the dungeon. The amount of sanity lost is equivalent to the amount of HP lost.
  • Sanity is automatically restored during daytime (as long as Ari is NOT in the dungeon). Additionally, going inside buildings at night restores sanity.
  • A new item available only for purchase at Valen's clinic, Mistbloom Potion, has been added that restores 50 sanity when consumed.

Ari will begin to suffer strange abnormalities as her sanity depletes. Starting at 70 or less sanity, Ari's vision will begin to blur, and a screen static effect will be applied. The intensity of the screen effect increases as your sanity reduces with the maximum effect reached at 30 sanity. At 30 or less sanity, Ari will begin to hear strange whispers and all dialogue will be "converted" into Cthuvian. At 0 sanity, Ari's perception of reality begins to fray, causing her to lose 1 HP every in-game minute, while also occasionally being teleported back to a nearby location she was at (within 5 in-game minutes).

Food Queue

While not a major addition like hunger and sanity, Mistbloom also slightly changes how stamina restoration works when consuming food. Consuming the same item(s) repeatedly will result in a penalty that is applied to the stamina recovery, reducing the stamina gained. The penalty will persist until more variety is introduced into Ari's diet.

  • The food queue keeps track of the 10 most recently eaten items (food).
  • When food is consumed it is automatically added to the list. As more food is eaten, the "oldest" tracked entries are removed.
  • The penalty applied to food consumed reduces the stamina recovered based on the number of times the item has been recently eaten, scaling from a 0% penalty for the first time an item is eaten, 10% penalty for the second time, 30% for the third time, and so on until the maximum penalty of 90% is reached by the sixth time.

Item tooltips are automatically updated to display how many of the item have been recently eaten and what the stamina recovery will be with the penalty included.

Custom Perks
Mistbloom adds several custom perks to help Ari survive. Currently, custom perks for farming and combat exist. These perks do NOT actually replace the original perk! While the text of the original perk is completely changed, the functionality for them is still there. For example, enabling the custom perk Rainy Day Outfit will both provide the custom perk's effect in addition to the original perk's (Refreshing).

  • Blood Pact (Combat - Tier 1): Modifies the default perk Guardian's Shield.
  • Adrenaline Rush (Combat - Tier 2): Modifies the default perk Generous in Defeat.
  • Rainy Day Outfit (Farming - Tier 1): Modifies the default perk Refreshing.
  • Well Weathered (Farming - Tier 2): Modifies the default perk Nice Swing.

If you have a suggestion for a custom perk you think would be a good addition for this mod please leave a comment.

Other Changes
Some additional changes have also been made to modify the core gameplay experience during inclement weather.
  • Stamina usage will be increased during inclement weather. For rain and snow, it will be increased two-fold. For storms and blizzards, it will be increased three-fold. The Well Weathered custom perk can help mitigate these effects.

Custom Mail
Mistbloom currently has one custom letter sent to Ari at the start of the game. It reads as follows:
Ari,

Welcome! I'd like briefly introduce myself as the town doctor and fill you in on something concerning our small town.

Recently a strange mist began plaguing our otherwise peaceful town at night. Shortly after it arrived I noticed an increase in patients visiting my clinic, all suffering from feelings of madness.

Juniper and I have been hard at work trying to identify the cause. So far we've determined that proximity to monsters or lengthy exposure to the mist at night are the primary causes.

With Juniper's help I was able to create a potion to help temporarily stave off the onset madness. Unfortunately, it requires expensive ingredients that aren't native to Mistria.

I've included some with this letter. If you need more please stop by my clinic and pick some up. But keep in mind that due to the cost of the ingredients I can't offer them for free.

Tips
  • Don't forget the free Soup of the Day at the inn!
  • Perks are going to feel somewhat essential when playing this mod.
  • Cooking will provide you with a means of sustaining Ari. Restorative Cooking in particular is recommended ASAP.
  • Farming has two custom perks to help offset weather related penalties. Note that for the Rainy Day Outfit perk, you MUST wear a Rain Hat with the perk active in order to prevent sanity loss.
  • Combat has two custom perks to help offset how dangerous the mines are.
  • A new custom cooking recipe Survival Rations requires only fiber and restores hunger.
  • A new custom item Mistbloom Potion is available at the clinic and restores sanity.

Companion Mods (Optional)
These are additional optional but recommended mods that further add to the experience:
  • Profit Margins (50%): Reduces your income from selling items by 50%. This makes farming less profitable, and quests more impactful.
  • Quake Spell (Full Restore): Replaces the spell Full Restore with an entirely new spell, Quake, which damages all enemies (and Ari) on the current dungeon floor. Note that casting Quake with the custom perk Blood Pact enabled has a high probability to kill Ari

Loading Notes
In order to create the screen static effect, Mistbloom generates random "noise" while the game is initially loading (title screen load). This process may take several seconds depending on your screen resolution and CPU. If you change resolutions (screen size) while playing the mod will have to re-generate the random noise as well. This is normal behavior for the mod.

Have Fun!
This mod is meant to provide a fun new strange experience for Fields of Mistria. It will likely feel clunky at times. It's something I've been working on since about a month after the game released and it's still very much a work in progress.

If you have any suggestions or feedback please leave a comment!
