About this mod

This is an upscale of every HUD and every texture in the game using NMKD Sourcetex model. The HUD textures have been cleaned up, upscaled and then scaled back to their original dimensions, since every 2D HUD element is hardcoded in the game and changing that produces visual errors.

All the work has been done using Cupscale, which is an Image Upscaling GUI based on ESRGAN, but with the NMKD Sourcetex model which is specially well on old low resolution textures. It adds detail, denoises and sharpens the result.

In order to install it follow these steps:

  • Run the game once to create the cache and the config.dat
  • Backup your whole Fate installation folder by copying the folder and pasting it inside a new one
  • Download the mod
  • Unzip the mod in your Fate installation folder overwriting every file
  • Press the Windows key on your keyboard + R, enter %localappdata% and the press OK
  • Find the WildTangent folder, then the Fate folder
  • Delete the Cache folder
  • Enjoy the game

Notes:
  • Since the size of the textures went from 194MBs to 1.3GB and we deleted the original texture cache, the first time every texture is loaded it will have to be compressed, so small hitches for the first minutes of gameplay are to be expected. These will be few and far between and mostly occur when you enter a new level of the dungeon, or a new model is loaded (e.g. you feed a new fish to your pet and it transforms to something different that it hasn't transformed to before)
  • Any GPU from the last 10 or so years with at least 2GBs of VRAM will not have any performance penalty whatsoever
  • Make sure you use the latest d3d8to9 wrapper from here https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases (just download the .dll file and place it in your Fate installation directory). You could also try DXVK on top of this wrapper so you essentially translate the game from DX8 to DX9 and then to Vulkan. This will add a performance overhead but might help with stutters or low performance on some systems. It also comes with the benefit of Auto HDR on windows 10 and 11 if your monitor supports it.
  • Press the Windows key on your keyboard + R, enter %localappdata% and the press OK
  • Find the WildTangent folder, then the Fate folder, then the Persistent folder
  • Make a backup of your config.dat by selecting it and pressing ctrl+C and then ctrl+V
  • Open your config.dat by right clicking and selecting open with and then notepad
  • Set your screen resolution with SCREENWIDTH:1920 and SCREENHEIGHT:1080 (every resolution and aspect ratio that is supported by your monitor works, the HUD will be stretched horizontally on every other aspect ratio except 4:3 but the game will be fine)
  • Save the file and close it. You can change the other options from within the game
