Nexus Mods is hiring for a Front End Developer

  • Comment
We have been on the lookout for a dedicated Front End Developer for a while now and despite interviewing several individuals, we're yet to find the right person.

I know that lots of our users do not always see all the site news that gets posted so I am reposting the job information, just in case it catches the eye of the exact right person at the exact right time! Here is the job specification:

Description
We are looking for an experienced front end developer to join our website development team at our offices in Exeter, UK for our main website, Nexus Mods.

Your role will be to work alongside our back end developers and dedicated designer to deliver high quality, responsive front ends using the latest frameworks and standards. You will become an important part of a team where every opinion is welcomed.

If you like implementing cool new features and making sleek user interfaces and want to showcase your work to a large and engaging audience then this is the job for you!

We are looking for someone who is keen to learn and flexible in their approach to problem-solving. You will need production experience working with HTML/CSS/JS (with at least one front end framework e.g. Vue, React, Angular) and working knowledge of version control.

Our ideal candidate is someone who has experience working with both a UI/UX designer and a back-end team to deliver exceptional sites and features, however, having the right attitude regarding learning and developing your skills is more important to us than your experience in this area.

This is not a junior role and so we are expecting to see a history of delivered and deployed projects.

You will need to either be a UK citizen or have a right to work in the UK in order to be eligible for this role, as we cannot provide visas at this time.

In short:

  • Working with our back end developers to implement new features.
  • Working with the entire web team to design new features and functionality.
  • Participating in team meetings.
  • Keeping track of your workflow using project management tools.
  • Working with everyone at Nexus Mods to shape the future of our platform.

Other information:

  • This is a full-time office-based position from our offices in Exeter, UK, to be worked Monday to Friday, 40 hours a week.
  • We will offer a competitive market-rate salary dependent on your level.
  • We will provide high spec hardware for you to work from in the office.
  • For the right candidates, we may be able to assist with relocation expenses and logistics.

Requirements:

  • Expert at CSS, HTML and JS.
  • Production experience with at least one full JS front end framework.
  • At least 2 years working in front end development.
  • Strong communication skills both verbally and written (English).
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Experience or knowledge of video games not required, but you will enjoy the job even more if you like video games!

Benefits
Nexus Mods is an Alexa Top 750 website with a userbase of over 16 million users and serving over 1.5 billion pageviews a year. Working on such a popular site can be challenging, but rewarding, with a userbase that is very loyal and very vocal!

Due to the popularity of the site we try and work on the cutting edge of technology. If you are interested or excited by the latest advances in software and technology then you'll love working for us. We have a strong focus on researching new and upcoming tech and are always keen to explore new ways of improving the sites and services we provide through innovative means.

We are based in the heart of Exeter, a 15 minute walk away from Exeter Central station and 5 minutes from the main high street with all its shops, restaurants and the beautiful cathedral grounds.

We offer flexible working hours, provided you are in the office during the core hours of 10am and 3.30pm. The office environment is very casual, with plenty of lighthearted chat to break up the day, regular eating out, breaks that involve games and so on and so forth.

This sounds like an ideal job, being able to fly around in Star Bug all day and eating chicken vindaloos made by Kryten.  However, the Cybermen and Daleks could be a bit of a problem.  In any case, I hope you find someone with easy access to a London police call box.

Sadly, with all of those job requirements and limitations (location requirements, size of town, etc), you'll have to interview a lot more than "several".

Oof, I'm sitting on 4+ years of experience with front end/full stack and have been working entirely in react/node for the last two years, alas I'm in the U.S. Hope you guys find what you're looking for!

I work in PHP/Laravel, recently moved to ReactJS, Redux + Node.js. I'm from the South East in the UK. Are you taking any on remote positions? I don't have any means to travel to Exeter right now.

I think Dark0ne already answered this in the original position announcement:

Whoever you hire, can you please tell them to serve resized images for thumbnails/previews instead of loading all the full sized images on every page?

We do serve thumbnails everywhere - can you be more specific on where you're seeing this?

I think the problem is that all the JPEGs are encoded with ~99 quality setting which makes them exceptionally large and slows down the image loading. Usually a quality setting of 70-80 is enough, you won't notice a visual difference and it reduces the image size by a great degree.

@dloader not just that. There are some PNG images (600x337) that are over 100kb (compressed, but still far too large). That could be 3 decently compressed JPGs. Display 100 of them on a page and it all adds up. There are much more efficient ways to be loading & displaying images for quicker page loads, less server load and less resources being used by users browsers.

There is also a fair bit of 'concept code' that was made for prototype purposes that was never replaced. I don't want to sound rude (well, not too rude, though these things have been bugging me for a while and they don't seem to change) - but there is actually a lot of stuff that was never addressed that was supposed to have been sorted pre-launch. There are the new pages (and Vortex, the mother offender) that don't seem to be consistent with the current design in the least - fonts, colours, padding, margins, sizes, broken grids etc. The styling code is still a giant mess (should have been SASS'd). The JS (in various areas) isn't as efficient as it could be and needs addressing. I could go on about it at length, but yes the site definitely has a lot of unresolved issues.

On another note - the best people for the job aren't going to be locals. I know it's a long standing requirement in these posts but you're essentially cutting out the vast majority of people who would be able to handle all of this and maintain it properly. I'm not trying to put my name up in any way shape or form - I don't even do this sort of work anymore - but with the amount of times it has been advertised now it seems like at the very least there's going to be some sort of compromise with candidates who are actually able to meet all of those requirements (including being able to work there locally).

There are lots of problems of course, big problems and small problems.

The biggest problem ( in my opinion at least ) is that a lot of people here seem to value talking over doing. ( Which is actually a little strange for a site about modding if you think about it. ) New staff is required to enjoy "plenty of lighthearted chat" at work. Most Mod authors also obviously favor writing pages upon pages of extensive documentation and spent endless amounts of time on supporting their Mods, rather than investing in the actual creation of content. And the users here also seem to spent more time in forums commenting and discussing unrelated stuff than actually playing the Mods.

The JPEGs lacking compression on the other hand is a rather small problem but fixing it might result in a huge performance boost. So maybe this would make an easy target to get started. Because you know you have to start somewhere to get things done. Just talking about it doesn't do anything. ;-)

@MrMason I loaded up https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind with the network tab open, and some of the "thumbnails" downloaded were as large as 1MB and alone took over 2 seconds to load (I'm on gigabit fibre so it's not a result of my internet quality).

and definitely needed, and back end too, some stuff is pretty much broken on this site, and some decisions on functionality are beyond me.
Like, you cannot log in with Firefox on the FNV nexus, you have to go to the Fallout 4 Nexus, log in, and then you can browse FNV site, it has been this way for more then a year, also if you want to browse the mods that are released last week (default is day) the frontpage lets you choose "new this week", and then you have to scroll and view more at the bottom, and then go up and only then you can choose the next 12 or 16 mods released this week, it's kinda annoying and bad design, much better would be that if "new this week" where clicked, that you can immediately choose the next 12 or 16 (depending on your screensize) mods, and do NOT open a new page, just keep it on the fontpage in the content pane, also, you easily mistake the "new this week (media)" for the 'new this week (files)", after a few times you know, but it's just these little things that makes a site stand out, and there are more little annoyances in the recent design, the old design looked a bit less, but worked a whole lot better and user friendly, media was obviously separated from files, now you don't really know what you're looking at at first glance with the lean white chars. I like the flat look, but it has been a while now, and it seems strange to me that no one really notices these things, i'm a peferctionist in my mods and 3d work, so i often get annoyed when i stumble into things that arent done right or don't get fixed or perfected. That is the most annoying thing, that it doesn't get fixed, i often hear people say don't whine, but i simply think it is your job, do it right, that's not whining, it's obvious that if one does a job, that he does it right, and if mistakes are made, they get fixed. But the Internet and software companies don't seem to work that way..they rather let it be for a few years, and then change the design completely, again with a bunch of new flaws till the next layout change..

First of all, thank you for being a mod author and contributing to this site monetarily and to its community. So about your complaints with the new design: I arrived on Nexus Mods shortly before the switch to the new design, using the old one for only about a week, so I can't certainly say which was better. but the issues you raised seem minor to me. Sure, it would be nice if they fixed them, but moving media away from mods, or requiring one or two fewer clicks to see new mods, I think they did that for the sake of the servers. They can't automatically show a whole bunch of mods to every user, who may just visit the site to see what was new in the last few hours. Also, I'm not sure, but I think some of your annoyances might be fixed with a Premium Membership. I can show 80 mods per page and don't have to do a lot of clicking to get there. I think they wanted a balance between functionality, aesthetic, and server strain.
