Download speed cap increase for Supporters and non-Adblockers

  • Comment
Since 2007, Nexus Mods has had a download speed cap of 1MB a second on all downloads unless the user is a Premium Member. Starting this week, this download speed cap has been increased to 2MB a second if certain criteria are met.

Why does Nexus Mods place a speed cap on downloads?
The download speed cap on Nexus Mods ensures we can budget for and keep our substantial bandwidth bills within an acceptable price range and makes sure we aren't shocked (or utterly destroyed!) by spiralling bandwidth costs.

We use a global CDN to serve our files and our bandwidth is charged by the 95th percentile method. Essentially, that means we're charged based on the speeds we deliver, not the total amount of files that are downloaded. Thus, the faster users download from us, the more our bandwidth bills will cost. By limiting the speeds, we ensure that our expenses remain linked to the number of users who use our site and not the connection speeds of our user base. As a result, it's far easier to budget our bandwidth bills based on our active user base because more users typically means more ad revenue which means the increased bandwidth costs will be offset by the increased advertising income. If we didn't cap our downloads we could not budget in the same way.

What are the caps?
Premium Members who have financially supported Nexus Mods are able to download without a speed cap as they are directly supporting the upkeep of the sites. If you're interested in finding out about all the perks of Premium Membership, or want to become a Premium Member, please head to our information page.

Thus, up until now, there have been two tiers of users on Nexus Mods when it comes to download speeds:

  • Normal users. Members who have not bought Premium Membership. These users are capped at 1MB/second.
  • Premium Members. Members who have an active Premium Membership. These users are not capped.

We've now created a third tier of users on Nexus Mods that directly impacts the download speed cap. This third tier includes "Supporters", and users who do not use Adblockers. Supporters are users who previously bought a Premium Membership that has since expired (or who have specifically bought the "Supporter" membership from the site for a price of £1.29).

Supporters, along with users not using Adblockers, will have their download cap increased to 2MB a second, which is double what Adblock users will receive. This is how the speed cap tiers now look:

  • Adblock users. Members who have not bought Premium Membership and use Adblockers on the site. These users are capped at 1MB/second.
  • Supporters and non-Adblock users. Members who are in the Supporter member group or who consistently do not use Adblockers on Nexus Mods. These users are capped at 2MB/second.
  • Premium Members. Members who have an active Premium Membership. These users are not capped.

This speed cap increase is live now for manual downloads and will be rolled out to Vortex within the next two weeks.

Why increase the speed for non-Adblock users and Supporters?
Simply put, if you're reading this, you've cost us money. To keep this site running we need to pay a very hefty price. From direct expenses, like the servers and bandwidth that are used to serve the page content to you, to more indirect but equally important expenses like our office space, the staff that maintain and improve the site, the hardware we work on, software license fees, HR, payroll, legal fees, insurance and so on and so forth. All of these expenses need to be accounted for in order to keep these sites up and running well. If you'd like a full breakdown of what Nexus Mods needs money for, we've dedicated an entire page of the site to an infographic that puts it all in to easy to read data points. You can see that page here.

In this age of Adblockers, we believe that the users who financially support the site should be rewarded for their help. Whether by directly donating towards the site by buying Premium or Supporter Memberships or simply by choosing to not use an Adblocker while browsing the site, these users are the ones who help to keep the site up and fully operational. Without them, Nexus Mods would simply cease to exist. We believe the help they provide, consciously or unconsciously, should be incentivised and rewarded.

On the flip side, we do not want to punish users who want to use Adblockers but do not financially contribute to the running of the site. There are myriad different reasons why users choose to use Adblockers, and a lot of them are perfectly valid. For these users, their experience is not changing at all. They'll still be able to browse the site and receive the same experience as they always have done in the past.

In conclusion, we are now rewarding users who contribute financially to the running of the site and we are not placing any further caps or punishing users who use Adblockers.

We have Supporter membership, which costs $2, or Premium Membership, which costs $4.50. Either of which give you ad free for life.

I've found my Premium Membership excellent value. I like to support this site and its managers and modders, they've given me a great amount of enjoyment over the years. It's not a lot, and it's good to know I'm helping out.
And with the new Supporter level you've got faster downloads for less cash.

Membership or not, my adblocker stays, and I don't whitelist any sites ads. If it was just a matter of paying for an increase in download speed, that would be fine, but trying to force me to pay to get rid of bandwidth hogging, malware laced adverts is a good way of ensuring I don't support you financially. Why would I pay you to stop bothering me with ads when I can just block them?

Ads are fine they don't bother anything on my computer. I recently unblocked them and i haven't gotten any for the past weeks. If they take them off they don't get paid as much, if they stop making you pay same thing. The ads and memberships are what keep nexus here, they deserve a lot more than what there getting now in my opinion. Edit: Brennan your comment is a paradox it makes no sense how you said if it were just for bandwidth then fine, but it is also for ads which isn't fine. You just said you would buy it with the bandwidth but sense it takes away ads your not getting it. The purpose is to get rid of the ads so technically by that statement you would be happier with the deal sense it takes away ads and gives you bandwidth. They don't force you by the way you can still download just fine, and now they give you 2mb with no ad blocker which i'm finding fine. I can't figure out why you guys and gals are having problem with malware, I have no problems at all and i scan all the time for viruses.

Point taken but that isn't enough.

It's pathetic. People who can pay get the benefit but people who put actual content into the site don't? what a joke.

Megapolom, you mean reward the site owners for willingly using malicious ads and giving them money to stop wasting our bandwidth and attempting to infect our computers? I don't understand why it's our place to reward bad behavior, even if it is only $2.

That is indeed a crazy thought mega, to have to pay to not have malware infested ads. There is a reason ad blocker exists to begin with it. Zgrillo has the right of it, Sorry.

More than stop people using adblockers on the site they are kind of rewarding the people that do not use them or that have the supporter account, if you have adblock you can continue using the site as always, whitout changes, they are not lowering the cap for adblockers, they are increasing the cap for non adblockers and supporters, adblockers can get the same cap they aleardy had.

Technically you can sandbox the web browser that way malwares are contained and would not harm your computer.

Bad ads are not the mistake of site owners, they are the mistake of ad networks, in nexus you can report bad ads you see in the forum and the site owners ask the ad network to remove them.
So they are not willingly using malicious ads, but there is not much they can do about it other than what they do, today malicious ads are very hard to detect from their end, because those ads are very ofuscated and hard to detect, and nexus is not google or some big company to have their own ad network and a very powerful algorithm to detect malicious ads.

The site can't figure out that I don't use an adblocker here so I don't have much confidence in their supporter system working properly either.

It did not for me. The site did not ever recognize that the blocker was off. Turned it off on the first visit, still being punished.

I have had my adblocker disabled for this site forever but the site never figured it out. I still get the nag messages to turn off the blocker instead of ads. Vefrified multiple times that it is off and the site is white listed. Perhaps the site admin should fix the site to recognize this properly and serve ads again rather than punish us for cooperating as requested.

Can't you just use a debit card?
Maybe sience the premium is a subscription type thing, paypal request your card to charge in case you can't pay whit the funds you have on paypal, all being said this is only a hypothesis.
have you tried purchasing the life time premium or the supporter rank? maybe sience those are not subscription based paypal don't ask you the card?

I am a huge fan of Nexus Mods. I have purchased a subscription several times and recently purchased the lifetime subscription. Having said that I have to echo several of the comments below. This site has a problem with 'adjacking.' I can remember several times that the advertisements have redirected my browser to sites that I can only assume are malicious. On top of that I've encountered several instances where I left Nexus Mods open and went to sleep. I was awoken by an advertisement that somehow took over audio in the middle of the nigh and started blaring sound. I don't know how specifically the issue can be resolved from Nexus Mods perspective, but I haven't encountered this issue with other sites.

I get why you need to do this but f*** turning adblock off on this site. The three times I was dumb enough to do that I managed to get a virus. I know you guys claim you fight back against shitty ad providers but yeah. Instead I bought a supporter pack. If anyone ever asks me if they should disable adblock or just buy lifetime membership I'll respond "do you prefer aids or cotton candy?"

I've never had ad-block enabled for this site and instead have a dns blocker that cancels and redirects me to a "dns blocked" page. Try this, if you can, it's extremely useful and saves tons of time. On top of never having ad-block enabled for this, I've never contracted a virus from this site; even before I got the dns blocker, so I've got no idea why you've gotten a virus three times.
