This mod will fully work with headphones. Sound difference will be less on speaker systems.
If you're crashing upon launch, try installing https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145
If you're getting strange hrtf calculation results, disable your device's surround based sound effects from its related software. I can confirm nahimic 3 surround works well with this mod, I'm not sure about other softwares/devices.
Update: Mod On/Off demonstration video is added on description page.
Thank you for packaging this for Fallout 76. These HRTF mods need a lot more attention. Could you add this important information to the description and stickied post, though? A common problem with these HRTF mods is that it causes "muffled" or "distorted" audio for a lot of people. The fix for this is generally to go into the advanced speaker properties, untick "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device", and then tick "disable all enhancements" or "disable all sound effects". The problem is caused by something in Windows 10's audio stack with integrated soundcards. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings-winpc/sound-is-muffled-is-there-a-fix/f8b5cf9c-3347-4036-b1a5-7dff5b1da487 (see toscanini's post)
There used to be .mhr presets you could download, I checked around for archives I had on my hard drive and I found them, if you want to include these with the mod that would probably help out a lot with fine tweaking it for individual users. I don't know how up to date they are, but I did add some missing .mhr files from the github as well. I also renamed the .mhr files below so people don't have to though I'm unsure if it was necessary. I downloaded all the samples from here and repackaged them into an all in one download, all of this can be found below:
Instructions, install this mod and the stuff above, listen to the samples to find out what the presets sound like delete the ones that are already in the hrtf folder of this mod (unless you prefer them) find the one you preset that sounds best to you and place the corresponding .mhr files in the hrtf folder.
Hi DeathWrench. Thank you very much for your mods. ( not just the 76 ones ) Also thank you so much for your information, guidance and help "above 'n' beyond" that you've given in the posts sections of many mods by other authors, and in other post forums. Cheers Wrench.
To find where your game is installed: - If you have a desktop shortcut, right click it > properties. The "target" field will show the path. - If the shortcut is in the start menu: right click it > more > open file location. This opens a windows explorer window and selects the shortcut file in it. Right click it > properties. The "target" field will show the path.
The mod crashes on launch with the original 2015-2019 Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables, and also with the linked 2015 only version. For the life of me I can't get it work, it just crashes 1-2 seconds after spawning in.
The main menu of the game starts normally, but when loading the game itself, it crashes without errors. However, there is an error in the event log:
98c36ce1-9daf-4833-8191-30e2dd579772 Visual C++ 2015 is not installed because a newer version is already installed.
Can anyone suggest how you can try to solve the problem? Thanks!
It definitely has potential...but the changing of audio channels is very obvious and quite distracting, I couldn't keep it on for long but hopefully you can figure out a way to make the switch between channels less noticeable.
My experience with this is that the audio is significantly more directional, however certain sounds will intermittently cease working. The only frustrating instance of this is the sound made by robots when they're counting down to explode. This sound is simply missing ~80% of the time. My character dies around 3x per day just with this, even if I'm being careful. For this reason alone, I uninstalled. Even so ... endorsed, and kudos!
Try unticking "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" in advanced speaker properties, then tick "disable all enhancements" or "disable all sound effects". This seems to be a problem with integrated sound cards on Windows 10, as it happens with other wrappers like DSOAL too. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings-winpc/sound-is-muffled-is-there-a-fix/f8b5cf9c-3347-4036-b1a5-7dff5b1da487
I tried your suggestion, IDrinkLava, and the sound quality is still unfortunately the same.
It's a shame because I can hear the difference immediately and I know where the sounds are actually coming from without having to guess "Above or below??", but the muffled sound is really bothersome.
Odd, the muffled sound never appeared for me. Have you made sure to turn off spatial sound and made SURE that you're changing the actual headset device? Windows will occasionally duplicate the audio device for no real reason.
Yeah... same as OP, works great but weapons sounds, specially the shotgun, sound weak , hollow and very tiny. Need a bass boost or something! Tried enhancing it with Equalizer AO but couldn't get it to jive. World sounds are great, but PA foot steps and weapons sound like paper.
I experienced the same muffled qualities despite any alterations I made to my sound configs. It's a shame because the mod does work as intended, but the reduction in overall quality of sound was enough for me to discontinue its use. Hopefully a new version down the road will correct for this.
I realise that the following was what you meant to say but I will specify for any who might miss-understand. What this mod needs is : Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable Packages install >> run-time components << only.
Even if a person has a 64 bit Win OS PC, you can and in certain cases, should install the 32 bit version of the VC++ 2015 Redist Packs install run-time components. It will automatically only use the 64 bit run-time components.
(( Thanks and sorry for this info that may have been mentioned more than once in prior posts ))

All .mhr presets ; contains .mhr files from github, this mod and dsoal v1.31a
Samples.zip ; download and listen to these to understand what's what.

Did anyone manage to resolve this?
Thanks.

This is a MUSTHAVE for playing with headphones.
Latest update broke it for me. Get a popup "can't load x3daudio1_7.dll" and game will not load.
EDIT: I have to turn off the mod, get a headache from the sound quality :(
