About this mod
This mod overhauls the early Fallout 4 quest "When Freedom Calls" to fix its often-criticized pacing and excessive hand-holding. Instead of pushing the player directly toward Diamond City and revealing major story beats through Mama Murphy, this mod creates a break in the main questline—offering a more exploration-driven experience.

I need to believe that a man who just lost his son is running around setting up settlements or building beds — he should be lost, desperate, and searching for answers. This mod is an attempt to fix that.
Since I am limited by the amount of dialogue Mama Murphy has in the game, I opted for bare-bones conversations with her. Sometimes, I even changed all four player response options to the same thing because that is the limit of available voice lines. The quest still works, but that’s the limit.
🔄 Key Features:
- Narrative Rework of Mama Murphy:
Mama Murphy no longer tells the player that their son is alive or points them to Diamond City. Leaving the main story shrouded in mystery. - Main Quest Delay:
The quest "Jewel of the Commonwealth" no longer starts automatically, and the Diamond City map marker is added. Players must now explore the world and find their way forward naturally. - Adjusted Power Fantasy Elements:
- Minigun ammo is reduced to 180 rounds, making it a temporary edge—not a game-breaking weapon.
- The Power Armor found during the quest is damaged T-45 suit. Health is set to 15%.
- Magazine Changes:
Wasteland Survival Guide #5 no longer adds Diamond City to your map. Instead, it grants bonus XP for discovering new locations—encouraging exploration rather than railroading the player.
This mod is designed for players who want a more natural, open-world experience. By removing early-game spoilers and gating major quest progress behind organic discovery, the player’s journey feels more personal and immersive.
