International motorsports kneeled for a beheading during the Resource Wars.
From Formula One to the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, no one was surprised.
Petroleum costs skyrocketed; the New Plague suspended races. Wary team owners adjusted their neckties as the combustion engine became a political football; drivers and long-time crew were picked off by the draft.
Following the collapse of the United Nations and descent into war between Europe and the Middle East, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile disbands; F1 and the World Endurance Championship are dissolved with it. Oil fields in the Middle East ran dry - the world's automobile traffic came to a standstill.
Yet the axe only fell so far: 2060 saw the production of the first fission vehicles, with fusion not far behind. After a decade of uncertainty, NASCAR's remaining membership reformed as the National Association for Fission Car Auto Racing.
Millions of fans, new and old - some looking for a taste of excitement from the old days, some seeking Doppler-effected respite from international politics - returned to Indianapolis, Daytona Beach and Talladega to watch NAFCAR's inaugural 2061 racing season.
Fission changed the rules of motorsports and manufacturing adapted with it. A light press against the gas pedal of a combustion engine vehicle caused a small movement. If the same vehicle was replaced with a mini-reactor fission engine, the same light press caused neutrons to rip atoms apart; leading to explosive bursts of energy that sent the vehicle far ahead. These engines guzzled fuel to compensate; races became shorter due to frequent pit stops.
Risking overheating, structural damage and driver deaths, safety features such as self-shutdowns and acceleration inhibitors are implemented. Though necessary, many fission racers expressed distaste. These safety features forced drivers into dense packs on the tarmac, similar to changes brought on by NASCAR's restrictor plate racing era. With each season, competitive rules grew more strict and fans dwindled; NAFCAR seemed a fad.
In 2066, the first crude fusion cell is produced. Facing low ticket sales and angry team owners who hadn't yet seen the promised profits and glory of the old days, NAFCAR joined up with Chryslus Motors to usher in the fusion racing era.

Jude Wilson always knew she wanted to drive.
Raised by black and white recordings from NASCAR's golden age with her nose pressed against a cathode-ray tube television, she becomes enamoured with racing.
By 14, Jude skips school to rig fusion cells into old engines with other hobbyists. She begins taking part in illegal races across the Oklahoma plains. Though illegal and deadly, Jude's fusion racing arrests make headlines - in 2069, she is scouted by Slocum's Joe's racing team and becomes a rising star during NAFCAR's shift from fission to fusion racing. By 2073, each car entered at national competitions run on fusion engines, and Jude is one of the best - and riskiest - drivers on the tarmac.
In 2287, Jude emerged in the post-war Commonwealth Wasteland. The pink and tan racing suit with a brown leather jacket represented many highs and lows of her past - her greatest successes and some of her deepest regrets. After an encounter with a deathclaw shredded the old leather, she repaired the arm and painted a Minuteman insignia on the deltoid.
Though still a coffee-bitter and Buzzbite-sweet reminder of the past, the outfit now carries a higher purpose with her wherever she goes.

gardening--tools - THEY SAY IT'S UR BIRTHDAY!!!!! IT'S MY BIRTHDAY TOO, YEA! Though I wrote the above narrative, all fanon about motorsports in the Fallout timeline is gardening--tools' brainchild and I'm just playing in their sandbox. My only contribution is having suggested the name NAFCAR (and pointing out how NASCAR in the current day is no longer raced with stock cars, a parallel with NAFCAR leaving behind fission for fusion but keeping the name), voting for Jude to have Slocum's Joe as the main sponsor and poking gardening--tools about vehicular headcanons.
