Introduction

Rock The Wasteland aims to replace all of the default combat music in Fallout 4 with rock songs that I'm creating specifically for this mod.
This project is still in development so some tracks will be used more than once to fill in the gaps until I've composed more music.  All the songs that'll be used will be 100% instrumental and fall into the rock genre, naturally.

Hard drive failure!

Yup, my hard drive conked out on me whilst I was recording the last few clips for the preview video on the 26th November.  Luckily, I backed up all of my data on my computer when I finished the last music track for the mod.  Now that I've got a replacement HDD, I'll get back to work on recording the video preview clips and have the thing ready either today or tomorrow.

It'll probably be tomorrow as I have a date tonight.  Realistically I don't see myself recording 30-ish minutes of gameplay (most of which have to be rerecorded multiple times due to my OCD perfectionist ways) and being able to edit it all before 5:00pm this evening.

26th November 2016

A few days ago I finished making the final track.  You know what that means, right? Yes, Rock The Wasteland is ready for the v1.0 release!

Before uploading 1.0, however, I want to have an up-to-date preview video ready.  Doing this shouldn't take long though, I've been working hard over the last couple of days to record all the footage, and I'm almost done with that (only 5 more tracks need video footage recorded).  Editing the preview video shouldn't take longer than an hour tops, and rendering it into a .WMV format will probably add on an extra hour or two.
So, this evening then :) UK time of course, it's 11:45am as I'm typing this news update so expect the v1.0 download to be ready in a few hours.

I'd like to thank each and every one of you who have shown an interest in Rock The Wasteland, no matter how much or little that's been, and I hope you all continue to enjoy playing Fallout 4 with or without this mod.

Development doesn't necessarily have to stop here, though.  If anyone has any suggestions or constructive criticism, you're more than welcome to voice your opinions.  In fact, I urge you to! If something doesn't seem quite right, I won't know about it unless one of you tells me ;)

Remember Rock The Wasteland has its own SoundCloud profile that also serves as a preview for the mod's music.  You can listen to and download all the tracks I've created for this mod on SoundCloud, so it's an alternative to watching the video preview if you'd prefer not to watch a 20+ minute video.
'Rock The Wasteland' - SoundCloud profile

All music files on the RTW SoundCloud profile are in .wav format, so if you'd like to put any of them onto your portable music devices don't forget to convert the music files into a supported format (i.e. MP3 for iPods).

Video Preview (as of v0.1.2)

Changelog

- v0.3.0 -
  • Completely revamped the sound of all guitars in every track that's currently in the mod.

- v0.2.0 -
  • Added the following tracks:
MUS_Combat_Low_01.xwm
MUS_Combat_Low_02.xwm
  • Duplicated MUS_Combat_01.xwm to fill *_03.xwm and *_05.xwm as placeholders
  • Added my own rendition of Fallout 4's main menu theme music to replace the default (if a lot of people would prefer this to be an optional addon instead, please let me know in the comments so I can wave my wand and make it happen).

- v0.1.2 -
  • Added the following tracks:
MUS_Combat_03.xwm

- v0.1.1 -
  • Added the following tracks:
MUS_Combat_Boss_02.xwm
MUS_Combat_Boss_03.xwm

- v0.1.0 -
  • Added the following tracks:
MUS_Combat_04.xwm
MUS_Combat_Boss_04.xwm
MUS_Combat_Boss_05.xwm
  • Duplicated MUS_Combat_04.xwm to fill *_03.xwm as a placeholder (this is now the only regular combat track that's duplicated).

  • Added MUS_Combat_06.xwm

- v0.0.3 -
  • Added MUS_Combat_05.xwm

  • Switched around duplications of MUS_Combat_01.xwm and MUS_Combat_02.xwm (to 03 and 04, respectively) so that all 3 completed tracks are now evenly spread across the 6 regular combat music tracks.
  • Added in blank audio files to fill in all combat finale music (MUS_Combat_01_finale.xwm, MUS_Combat_Boss_01_finale.xwm, etc.), this should stop the original orchestral finisher tracks from playing after battle.

- v0.0.2a -
  • Duplicated MUS_Combat_Boss_01.xwm to replace every Boss track as placeholders, this will allow all/most boss encounters to play the custom track.

- v0.0.2 -
  • Added the first Boss track, MUS_Combat_Boss_01.xwm.
  • Added 'RTW - Silent Music Files' as an optional addon.

- v0.0.1 -
  • Early development initial release, 2 tracks completed, used evenly across all 6 regular combat tracks.

Creation Process - Uncut Video

This uncut video showing the creation of "MUS_Combat_06" is obviously very, very long.  I don't expect anyone to want to watch whole thing since it goes on for 3 hours, and I didn't design the video to be watched all the way through.  It merely serves as an example of the creation process.

Preview on SoundCloud

If you'd like to preview the tracks on SoundCloud, I've created a profile especially for the RTW mod.
Originally, I planned to create a SoundCloud profile for the mod when it's fully completed.  A few people have requested it sooner so here it is.

Specifics

Fallout 4 uses 16 separate main music tracks for combat situations.  Six are for regular combat with normal foes, five tracks for boss battles (very high level enemies, super mutant behemoths, deathclaws, etc.) and another five tracks that don't seem to be as intense as the rest (they sound more ambient than they do action-based).
In addition to these 'main' tracks, all regular and boss music is accompanied by a finisher track which serves to sort of transition the mood out of combat when the final foe is defeated.
I may or may not create custom finisher tracks, it depends on whether or not I can figure out how to make them go well with their respective main counterparts.  If I cannot make a decent selection of finisher tracks in the end, I'll create a blank audio file that'll serve as a placeholder so that you won't suddenly hear orchestral music right after a rock track has played following a battle's end.  I'll do my best, though.

(Un)Installation Instructions

-----------------
  Installation
-----------------

To install this mod, simply extract the 'Data' folder and copy/move it to your Fallout 4 directory.

---------------------------------------
Using "RTW - Silent Music Files"
---------------------------------------

If you intend to use the optional 'RTW - Silent Files' addon, please install the silent files first and then install 'Rock The Wasteland - Combat Music Overhaul' afterwards.

You'll be asked to overwrite existing files, this is fine so let it overwrite what it needs to.

--------------------
  Uninstallation
--------------------

Uninstalling this mod can only be done manually.  It's not difficult though, so don't fret.

Navigate to the following directory:
--
Fallout 4\Data\Music
Once you're there, delete the following files:
--
MUS_Combat_01.xwm
MUS_Combat_02.xwm
MUS_Combat_03.xwm
MUS_Combat_04.xwm
MUS_Combat_05.xwm
MUS_Combat_06.xwm
MUS_Combat_Boss_01.xwm
MUS_Combat_Boss_02.xwm

MUS_Combat_Low_02.xwm
MUS_Combat_Low_03.xwm
MUS_Combat_Low_04.xwm
MUS_Combat_Low_05.xwm
--
Within the folder named "Special", delete the following file:
--
MUS_MainTheme.xwm

There's no .ESP file in this mod, so once you've deleted all MUS_Combat' .XWM files as well as the MUS_MainTheme.xwm file, the game will no longer use them and it'll play the vanilla tracks instead.

----------------------------------------------
Removing - "RTW Silent Music Files"
----------------------------------------------

Navigate to the following directory:
--
Fallout 4\Data\Music

Once you're there, delete everything inside the Music folder.

Alternatively, you can also delete the Music folder itself.  Doing so will achieve
the same result.

There's no .ESP file in this mod, so once you've deleted the Music folder and/or its contents the game will no longer use the custom files and it'll play the vanilla tracks instead.
