What it does:
Mutes the game when you Alt+Tab or otherwise lose focus.
Unmutes when you Alt+Tab back in or focus the game.
If you manually unmute the game - It'll stay unmuted until you mute it again.
Version independent - Does not require updates and works on both old and new gen.
