Now the Vault isn't an infinite source of purified water. No reason to return there.

This shouldn't break your immersion at other places that are in good condition.
I checked in FO4Edit, and the (vanilla) assets used are referred to only at run down places, that are full of raiders, super mutants or triggermen, where the water chip doesn't work anymore, or never was installed one.
(I use it together with 'Rub Some Dirt In It - Dirty Pumps and Fountains' by boomdaddymaxwell, and 'Immersive Water Purification' by OldManWithers. They need some tweaking though to work well together, maybe I'll make and upload one later, we'll see.)
