About this mod

Does what is says on the tin. No more muddy and washed out Dogmeat textures. Edited base game Vanilla Textures to give Dogmeat a "new" look, with a few options for different texture sizes. Dogmeat's eyes have more detail and now reflect an environment, and his fur casts shadows!

No More Muddy Dog - A Dogmeat "Retexture"

WIP - 4k/2k/1k Body and Head "Retextures" and Material Edits
Also, an Eye "Retexture"

Note: This mod may not be for you, but will give Dogmeat an updated look.

Description:
The mod simply edits Dogmeat's Head and Body Vanilla Textures, to be a bit more colorful/sandy/peppery/noisy. The hair will appear to pop more than Vanilla, with some better coloring and contrast. All the hair is there in the Vanilla Textures, It's just not utilized all that well in my opinion. These edits have been made in the Diffuse, Normal, and Specular Maps.

I've often disliked the super muddy Vanilla Textures for Dogmeat, but loved his art direction and style. So over the years I've tried some various edits (e.g. color, contrast, noise, overlays, layer styles, etc.) with the Vanilla 2k Textures in Photoshop. The only textures used to create this mod are those provided by the base game and the HDDLC (same texture size as base game, just different look for the Diffuse, and improper channel set up for Normal and Specular Maps.)

After some more tinkering, I have also made edits to the Material Files for Dogmeat. Dogmeat's eyes now reflect an environment, and his fur casts shadows!

Download Options:

Main File:
- Recommended - 4k Retexture with 2k Normal and Specular maps
- This is probably the better of the options, considering quality/performance.

Update Files:
- Material Edits - Dogmeat's eyes now reflect an environment, and his fur casts shadows on his body.

- Eye Retexture - All maps have added detail/variation, but same overall shape compared to Vanilla.

Optional Files:

- 4k Retexture - This is overkill and a waste of memory, but the maximum texture size with the working project.
- 2k Retexture - Recommended if you like to not go above vanilla texture sizes.
- Only 2k Normal and Specular maps - Recommended if you like Vanilla coloring. No Diffuse Texture, This is only the 2k Normal and Specular Texture edits.
- 2k Retexture with 1k Normal and Specular maps - Smaller Normal/Specular Texture Size compared to Vanilla.

Install:
1. Just do the thing. Preferably with a Mod Manager like Vortex or MO2.
2. Download and install the Retexture Main File(Or one of the other Retexture Options).
3. Download and install the Material Edits Update File 1.7a(Required for best results, can be installed with any texture option).
4. Download and install the Eye Retexture Update File 1.7b

Changelog:
- v01.7b Update File -
Eye Retexture using Vanilla texture and file size. All maps have added detail/variation, but same overall shape compared to Vanilla.
- v01.7a Update File - Added a Material Edits file to be installed with any Retexture option. Required for best results! Dogmeat's eyes now reflect an environment, and his fur casts shadows!
- v01.7 - Previously, mod versions may have been marked "01.7" rather than being marked "v01.7".
This has been updated across the download options, as I had some inconsistencies with naming. Also, re-uploaded the files due to folder structure/naming being a bit wonky.
No need to redownload if yours are working correctly.

Future:
- Alpha edits, as the shape of the fibers in vanilla alpha channel tend to look a bit cartoonish, which could be utilized a bit more to give the 2k and 4k diffuse some more fidelity on the edges of the model that the hair sticks out of.
- More Hue/Saturation edits, possible variations.
- Hand paint/edit the vanilla fur textures to give the texture a more natural look and less "upscaled" feel.
