AKA: Holy Shit This One Actually Has Sound In It!!!!

A fun little replacer in case you really want an incongruous intro logo. Should work well with Source Engine Games' Sound and Main Menu Replacers

"But Keel," I may hear you ask, "Isn't it impossible to replacer .bk2 files and have sound on? How'd you pull it off?"

Simply put, you probably aren't aware of this, but Epic Games have actually released Rad Game Tools' Bink 2 encoder for use with Unreal Engine 5! Just last year, in fact. Only problem is that you have to download a whole engine just to get the Bink 2 encoder.

I received my version of the encoder from a Github page, which I will graciously link to, I believe it should be fine since the encoder is freely available in Unreal Engine 5. I then used it on the original valve.bik file to turn it into a .bk2 file, then renamed it to GameIntro_V3_B.bk2, then threw it in my Mod Organizer 2.

I recommend using Mod Organizer 2 to install this, by the way. It is just a genuinely superior option to Vortex.

This replacer, as mentioned in the overview, also requires an updated bink2w64.dll (version 2021.11.1.0), as the one that comes with the game is too outdated. It simply skips over any .bk2 file created with the most recent versions of the Bink 2 converter. That one requires manual installation. Should be okay to distribute

Honestly, making this was a bit of an ordeal. There was hardly any documentation on making mods that involve .bk2 files to begin with, and information on the Bink 2 encoder is obscure. Might make a detailed tutorial or even alternate Valve intro logo replacers if there's any interest. Probably would do it anyway, but it's fun having some support.

Issue(s):

  • The replacer .bk2 file may look a bit stretched compared to the original .bik file. This is because I am still unfamiliar with Rad Game Tools, and the aspect ratio has to be 16:9 or else the video gets shunted to the side. Would appreciate help on this.

New issues will be posted here as they are reported, and crossed out when they are resolved.
