I was underwhelmed with the gas masks in the game. The measly 15 rads reduction seemed more like an afterthought slapped onto a piece of aesthetic clothing than anything else, so I whipped up some changes myself. This is barely a mod; I've literally just tweaked some figures and added in some S.P.E.C.I.A.L effects for good measure.
The risk of Radiation in the wasteland is less the powerful emittance of radiation, and more the risk of ingesting dust and debris that are heavily radiated. I have therefore made the Gas Masks fairly OP with a rad resistance of 250, from the original 15.
I've also added 15 fire resistance & 5 armour to the Assault Gas Mask, and 5 fire resistance & 3 armour to the Gas Mask & Gas Mask with Goggles, my logic being that some of the damage fire offers is through inhalation, and the Assault Gas Mask will protect from heat better with its hood.
However; wearing a gas mask is stifling, frightening to others, and restricts your field of view both through narrow lenses and their effects on vision. Adding any actual imagespace edits is WAY above my abilities so, lets just use our imaginations haha. Gas masks now reduce Charisma and Agility by 2, and Perception by 1. I did this both because wearing a gas mask does actually suck, but also that with the added bonuses I wanted a reason to not just wear it all the time.
