Build a settlement security system computer in a settlement, then link it to any of the following :
- Warning lights : these are based on lightboxes. Initially place them near a turret and that turret will link to that warning light and the SSS computer. The light will be be green when it is linked properly (if it is blue, it could not link to a turret, red means it could not link to the computer). When that turret goes into combat mode (including "searching" mode) the warning light will flash blue and red and the alarm in the computer will be turned on. Note that once you have initially placed them near a turret so they know which one to link to, you can them move them to wherever you want. They need to be powered to work though. If you "use" the warning light, it will show you the turret it is linked to by shading it green for 2 seconds.
- Door controllers : these look like the logic gates from the Contraptions DLC (I just used that model - they don't act like logic gates and the contraptions DLC is not required). Place them near a door to link to that door (the door will open and close to show you it is linked). Once the link is made, you can move it to wherever you want (they do not need to be powered). When the SSS computer alarm goes on, the linked door will close. Note that once a door is linked it can no longer be manually opened or closed - but if you "use" the door controller, it will open/close the door. If you use it when the alarm is on, it will open the door for 2 seconds then close it again (so I put the controller on the outside in case I get locked out of my own settlement!)
- Sirens : build these anywhere. When the alarm goes on, the siren is turned on as well. Note that these are different to normal sirens and cannot be turned on or off manually. They need to be powered.
- Safety Switches : build these anywhere. When turned on, they will count as an activated turret and turn the alarm on. These need to be powered.
- Power connectors : there are two types, one that transmits 1 power when the alarm is off and one that transmits 1 power when the alarm is on. One use for them is to hook them up to a delayed off switch which is connected to a fireworks mortar to summon minutemen when the alarm goes off (the delayed off switch prevents the mortar launcher from continuously firing)
All the items can be found under the defense menu in the workshop (they have their own section at the end).
I have heard that enemies will teleport when a settlement is totally walled off, but I've rarely seen it myself. I have, however, encountered situations where they clip through sections of the wall, but this has also been rare.
This works well with my Workshop Power Management mod, as then I don't need to actually physically connect wires to everything to power them. That mod can set them to accept radiant power.
