Although never used in the movie, I thought the white katana Cleric John Preston wears in the final scenes of Equilibrium was really cool looking. Preston surrenders the weapon to gain entrance and later uses another cleric's sword. This is probably for the best, as John's katana doesn't have a tsuba (鍔)or crossguard. I did a little research and the best reason I could find for someone removing the hilt of a katana is "it looks cool" (or for storage, but you take the whole sword apart for that) In fact, the only nihontō I could find that didn't use one regularly is the tanto, and it doesn't have one for concealment purposes (also, it's a dagger, not a true nihontō [sword]).
Incidentally, I'm not a big martial arts or anime fan, I'm just a sword nerd.
Like the Ronin Sword, I used the in-game sword textures (Ronin uses Revolutionary Sword, this one uses Chinese Officer Sword). Learning textures is my next project.
