NXGEN is a project that aims to replace low quality art assets in Fallout 4 with ones of far greater resolution, helping bring this game into the next generation.
Not only will textures be replaced with high quality 3D scans, but also the meshes will be greatly increased in fidelity. Crucially, this is achieved without breaking precombines, meaning little to no performance loss.
My first release to you all is this replacer for the Forsythia bushes. The vanilla bushes, like most of the foliage in this game, is simply a number of flat planes with a billboard texture applied to them. My replacer is a highly detailed mesh, with individual branches, twigs and leaves. Actual three-dimensional detail.
With update 1.1 the hedgerows are now also replaced.
The meshes in this mod are of much higher geometrical density. In spite of this, the forsythia replacers actually perform better than the vanilla assets. The hedgerows added in version 1.1 does incur a small performance hit though. This may be improved upon in the future.
Texture usage of the Vanilla bush was 10,6 MB.
Texture usage of "NXGEN Nice Bush" is 8,66 MB.
That's right. A slight decrease in VRAM usage.
Precombines are not broken. The old bushes are not removed, but simply flagged in the material file to not be rendered. The new asset is then placed in the exact same spot. Seamless replacement.
