It's those yellow or orange trails behind a bullet when you fire a gun in some games or in some movies. I find them very annoying and they're not very realistic.
They happen in real life, the reason for them is so you can see where your rounds are landing and adjust your aim to bring fire onto the enemy position, they are a help if you dont have a spotter.
