About this mod

Dust Storm Effects & Heat Hazard enables an immersive afternoon 'heat' effect on the player, and also diminishes the player's capabilities in a dust storm. This mod is my attempt to solve lacking immersive support for really great mods that turn the wasteland into a desert like Desperados Overhaul and/or the Badlands series. ESP or ESL Flagged!

Dust Storm Effects & Heat Hazard: A Dusty Dude Immersion Mod

This mod is weather independent. I suggest True Storms with my Desert-Like Weather Chances patch to ensure it "makes immersive sense".

Desert mods like Dustbowl and now Desperados Overhaul or the Badlands series of mods really make me wish for a hot dang afternoon! You can keep the nuclear winter. I also wanted more from the dust storms that can occur in vanilla or through the truly amazing vanilla redo of dust storms by True Storms. This mod
does not change or alter weather in any way or hook into weather mods*.

Inspired by environmental hazard mods that provide a constant effect like radiation or similar effects to the player, as the mod author for DS&H, I would like to also thank the mod author behind Tumbleweed Tunes for many hours of listening to the Dusty Dude.

Check out my other Dusty Dude Abides mods. Support for all my mods is primarily here, but also on my Discord channel.

What Are The Effects?

'Heat': Slow health drain during the entire afternoon.

I didn't want to hook into complicated mechanics like dehydration or similar in the event players had preferred survival-esque mods installed and working for them. I also didn't want yet more added custom scripts from any place other than vanilla. However, I needed some way to simulate the extraordinary heat I wanted from my game so this mod will slowly drain health over time when outside in the afternoon (00.15 health drain constantly). It is quite easy to counter by eating, drinking or using health items like Stimpaks. Remember, immersive but not brushing your teeth level immersive.

Dust Storm Effects: Reduces carry capacity and prevents sprinting.
This was my way of simulating buffeting winds tearing at you from many directions, the inability to see properly, that sort of thing. In some modes this may mean not being able to run either. In my own immersive way I just hunker down (crouch) and wait it out behind some object as someone might do when winds threaten to whisk them away.

When Does This Mod Activate?

At the very least you need to have completed the Go Home initial quest out of the vault. Jaunt over to Sanctuary, done.

Next, this mod applies a 'heat' effect during the afternoon. This mod will also diminish the player's carry capacity (-50 lbs) and prevents sprinting during a dust storm. You will know when the heat effect goes active because you see a brief glow/fire effect around the screen in first person or the whole character (3rd person) when it is active. It's a perk magic effect so it should never accidentally set anyone else on fire if you bump them.

As for the dust storm effect, the standard upper left message box on the screen will tell you what's going on. Regularly.

When Does This Mod's Effects Actively Stop Working?

Yes I had to think of that. Heat effect only works in the afternoon, a positively stated event in the mod. I also prevented it from occurring at any other time of day each by line item. The dust storm effects only happen during a dust storm, which can be anytime obviously. It might even be a combo effect of heat and dust storm!

As you may know sometimes effects don't occur if you exit an interior into a weather already active. Sometimes the game doesn't quite register as well, resulting in one day where you got lucky.

Safety Features

Because of the odd nature of Bethesda games I added a few safety features. One was to just use vanilla as a base and copied a carry weight 'magic' effect into my mod (acts exactly the same as the original vanilla except for the message displayed to avoid confusing effect messages).

As you know it is impossible to sleep, wait, or fast travel while taking damage, so to avoid unintended problems the heat damage effect will stop entirely if you crouch. You could just crouch your way through the afternoon, but wouldn't you rather just take a siesta until the day cools? You do you though.

Other safety items:
  • Does not activate in a true interior (in the Sanctuary root cellar for example, but will be active if you try to shelter in one of the houses)
  • Does not activate when sleeping or waiting even out in the midday sun during a dust storm (take a siesta)
  • Does not activate when in dialogue camera**
  • Any counter to fire 'magic' effects directly ON the player (not just armor) will prevent this heat effect

A Dust Storm By Any Other Name - Which Weather Mods Will Work?

* By dust storm I mean only the vanilla dust storm. If your weather mod uses that vanilla dust storm in any way it will apply here. For example, True Storms overrides the way the vanilla dust storm looks/sounds, and believe you me it is a vast improvement, and works beautifully with this mod. Have you seen a vanilla dust storm? They just sort of drift along, but a True Storms version really looks and sounds like it. My own images are the True Storms versions. Please remember though that this mod does not alter weather in any way.

If your weather mod does not use the vanilla dust storm, override it, or creates its own this mod will not activate the dust storm effects unless YOU change this mod to do so. Please feel free. Afternoons are vanilla so it seems unlikely anyone's mod would negate the effect.

Suggested Mods

I put all of my suggested mods into Desert: Modlist. Check it out.

** A short story that Nick Dislikes. Dialogue Camera should always be used for stopping effects. In my very first character Nick and I were in the Glowing Sea. He wanted to have a conversation. It was that really long conversation that can go on and on. Guess what happened? Yup, the very slow rad gain combined with Nick not shutting up = my death by radiation poisoning. Nick! Shush!

*** Radio mods might suddenly stop playing like I have experienced every so often, and there are ways to fix it. One important tip is to remember if you installed any additional mods since you last heard it playing. If so the radio mod may have been moved out of its original load order slot, and that radio mod may need to be in its original slot! If your mod manager can force a mod to stay in its assigned load order, do that. That has kept me from experiencing that problem for a while now.
