A Little Background
This project was conceived when I decided to create the perfect winter playthrough - only that I could not find a mod that removes all the pesky insects ambiance. It took me many hours of gameplay to come to the conclusion that I have indeed located and replaced all instances of insects noises in-game. Now you may enjoy a winter wasteland without these six legged creatures ruining your immersion.
The Specifics
In order to accomplish this, my immediate thought was to replace the sound files in question with a blank sound file. After downloading the BAE tool with which I can view and decompress files labeled with either insects or cicadas in the mainsound bae file, I extract the data in question. These are either in .wav or .xwm format; the wav files are simple enough, but the xwm requires another third party tool in order for them to be converted to another file type. I did so with Yakitori Audio Converter

After the files are converted, I then made sure that they are indeed sounds of insects heard in the background of the game. First try was a hit and miss, as I still heard instances of cicadas crying in the Quincy area. After another round of scouring, I found that these sounds were coming from a string of files labeled as 'bird cries.' Naturally, the cries of cicadas were gone after that.
The two major DLCs were of a similar story, without less setbacks, of course, because of the somewhat more direct nomenclature.
Why do I want this?
Insects, specifically cicadas, katydids, crickets etc, do not live in frigid climates. The nuclear winter mods that I used displayed a near constant temperature of 0 or subzero degree celcius, which is deadly to most if not all of the said insects. If you want to have an immersive experience while running a similar load order, or you simply dislike the cries of insects, then you will want to download this mod.
