About this mod

The vanilla SMG's art assets aren't very good! This mod replaces them with something much more true-to-life to the real-world Thompson SMG. New models, textures and animations.

1. DESCRIPTION
===============

The vanilla "Submachine Gun" is obviously intended to be a Thompson SMG, but its art assets are somewhat misshapen, inaccurate and ugly. Thompson SMG Replacer (TSR) gives the Submachine Gun new meshes, textures and animations, transforming it into something much more true-to-life to the iconic Thompson SMG.

Several weapon mods were altered to better resemble the Thompson, too; notably the barrel options are now a choice between the standard horizontal fore-grip and the iconic Thompson vertical fore-grip. In addition, the magazine options are now between 20 and 30 round stick magazines, and 50 and 100 round drum magazines.

Also, the very odd "Short Stock" was changed to simply "No Stock" - far more likely than someone sawing a full buttstock in half and then going to the trouble of fashioning an all-new buttplate to fit the now smaller butt end of the stock. The "Recoil Compensating Stock" now features a rubber recoil pad. Finally, instead of using the vanilla reflex sight assets, the SMG's reflex sight now appears as a Nydar Gun Sight - a commercial reflex sight dating back to the 1940s; marketed for use on hunting shotguns.

Note that the new assets are based mostly on the Thompson M1A1, but unlike the real-world M1A1, it has the horizontal grooves in the receiver that allow it to accept drum magazines - like the earlier Thompson models. Consider it a Wasteland modification or just a difference in the Fallout timeline, I guess.

This mod was split off from Weapon Addition and Replacement Suite (WARS), so its assets are duplicates of those found in WARS. If you want to use WARS, you should uninstall TSR first.

3. INSTALLATION/UNINSTALLATION
========================

Installation:

- Simply install as usual using a mod manager like Nexus Mod Manager, Mod Organiser or Vortex.
--- A manual install should be fine too, but I'll just assume you know what you're doing there.

- After installation, all files - including the readme (please read the readme) - will be found in your \Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout 4\Data\ directory.

- TSR will need to come after anything else that edits the vanilla SMG in your load order - if you want it to work, that is - but please see the Conflicts/Known Issues section for more info.

- TSR uses an ESL-flagged ESP plugin, so it will not take up a load order "slot".

Uninstallation:

- It's generally not recommended to uninstall Fallout 4 mods with an ongoing save-game, but TSR specifically is unlikely to cause problems. Make a backup save before uninstalling though, just to be safe.

- Disable/delete as usual using your mod manager.
--- For manual uninstalls, delete all TSR related files from your \Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout 4\Data\ directory. Check the TSR archive file you downloaded to identify these files.

4. PLAYING THE MOD
=====================

Being a replacer for the vanilla SMG, there's not much you need to know ahead of time; you can just install TSR and play as normal. If you want to know more about what you're getting though, read on:

TSR doesn't remove or add any weapon mods for the SMG, but several of its existing mods were changed to look and behave somewhat differently - including some minor stat changes to match. (Notably the formerly "quick eject" mods no longer increase reload speed. Indeed the larger the magazine, the slower the reload, as in the base game.)

Here are the primary changes to the SMG's weapon mods:

- Barrels
--- Standard Barrel -> Standard Barrel, Horizontal Foregrip
--- Short Light Barrel -> Finned Barrel, Vertical Foregrip

- Magazines
--- Medium Magazine -> 20 Rd Stick Magazine
--- Medium Quick Eject Drum -> 30 Rd Stick Magazine
--- Large Drum -> 50 Rd Drum Magazine
--- Large Quick Eject Drum -> 100 Rd Drum Magazine

- Stocks
--- Short Stock -> No Stock

Other things to note:

- Minor changes to some crafting recipes for the SMG weapon mods to match the above changes. (Also the buttstock recipes now actually include wood.)

- The Silver Submachine Gun
--- Covered by TSR and has a custom set of textures. (Note that the mags are *not* silver however, as I liked the two-tone look and thought it made more sense to use regular mags anyway.)
--- Now has weapon mods by default that make it more closely resemble the weapon seen in the Silver Shroud posters. (I.e. the vertical foregrip and Cutts compensator.)

5. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
===============

Q) Why am I seeing the vanilla animations and/or models and textures rather than the new ones from TSR?
A) Short version: It's a conflict. Try putting TSR lower in your load order. Long version: It's most likely a conflict with another mod that also edits the SMG. Usually you can identify the culprit by opening your load order in FO4Edit and looking at TSR's plugin to see what else is editing the same records. Removing the conflicting mod would be best (as long as you care more about TSR than it), but you could also try loading TSR after it.

Q) Does releasing this mod mean that you'll also release other weapons from WARS as standalone mods?
A) No plans for that, sorry. The weapons in WARS are set up quite differently to the weapons in the base game, as WARS is an overhaul mod. They're set up differently because I REALLY didn't like the way weapons were handled in vanilla FO4; it's why I'm making WARS in the first place. I don't have time to essentially redo, from scratch, all the plugin-side work for the weapons - especially for the sake of something that I don't like and won't use myself. I made an exception for the Thompson because I could release it as (for the most part) simply an asset replacer. It was by far the easiest weapon to release with a vanilla setup. Even then, it was still something of a pain to split off in this way - because it did still require a bunch of plugin work. Don't say I never did anything for you. ;-)

Q) Does this mod accurately represent what the Thompson SMG will be like in WARS?
A) In terms of art assets, yes. (Though the weapon mods are structured differently. E.g. the horizontal/vertical foregrips are on their own mod slot.) Beyond that though, no. Again, weapons are set up very differently in WARS than they are in vanilla FO4.

6. SAVE GAMES
===============

- You don't need to start a new game when installing TSR.

- It's generally not recommended to uninstall Fallout 4 mods with an ongoing save-game, but TSR specifically is unlikely to cause problems. Make a backup save before uninstalling though, just to be safe.

7. CONFLICTS / KNOWN ISSUES
============================

Conflicts:

- TSR will conflict with other mods that also edit records related to the Submachine Gun. Use FO4Edit to identify exactly which records are edited by TSR.

Known Issues:

- An existing SMG that had a "quick eject" magazine before installing TSR may still be referenced as such in its name. Dropping and picking the weapon up again should update its name - as should modifying it at a workbench.

9. MODDER'S RESOURCE INFO
==========================

You can release something based on Thompson SMG Replacer without first asking for my permission, provided it meets the conditions I've laid out below. If you're unsure about something after reading this, feel free to contact me to ask about it. I may refine these conditions over time to make it easier on myself and the end-user - and with that in mind I retain the right to do so if necessary. It probably *won't* be necessary to change anything drastically... but just in case.

***If you want to redistribute Thompson SMG Replacer somewhere:***

This is something I don't give permission for, so please don't. I do like to help people that have some kind of problem using my mods, and this is made much more difficult if they happen to be using a version of the mod from some undisclosed third-party location that may be outdated and/or modified without my knowledge.

I will add an exception here: If - in some distant, dystopian future - Nexus Mods and anywhere else I personally have uploaded TSR to has ceased to exist, AND I'm not around to re-upload TSR somewhere else... then you can upload TSR somewhere so that people can continue to access it. Contact me first and give me time to respond, though. My e-mail address is right there. It's pretty easy.

***If you want to release something that adds to, alters or merges Thompson SMG Replacer:***

This is fine; just provide credit for what you've used, as detailed below.

I'd suggest not simply putting out a replacement for the plugin though, unless you absolutely have to for some reason. That would automatically conflict with anything put out by someone who decides to do the same thing as you. It would also break (or be broken by) any potential updates to TSR itself.

***If you want to release something based on art assets from Thompson SMG Replacer:***

TSR is a modder's resource - for Fallout 4 mods. (See below if you want to use assets from TSR in something other than a mod for Fallout 4.)

You do need to provide credit for what you use, though. Something like "Thompson SMG from Thompson SMG Replacer, by Antistar" for example, ideally with a link to TSR's Nexus page. Even better would be to credit *all* the people involved, as per the credits in this readme.

If you want to use assets from TSR in something other than a Fallout 4 mod, this is only possible for the assets that were not themselves derived from base Fallout 4 assets. That's not my stipulation; that's up to Bethsoft, not me. But hey, if you can back up whatever you're doing with a letter from a Bethsoft lawyer saying that it's okay, go for your life. Like I said, it's not up to me. Just - y'know - be classy and provide credit for what you've used.

The only things derived from base Fallout 4 assets are the sounds and some of the animations (technically), so this seems unlikely to come up, but I need to say it.

Finally, resources from TSR can only be used in non-commercial projects.

12. VERSION HISTORY
=================

Version 1.0.1 (08-09-22)
- "Inspect" idle animation was given a few seconds of more neutral idle movement at the start of the animation, so that the "inspect" portion will only be seen if you really are standing still for a while.
- Fixed 3rd-person "firing from cover on the left" animation - typically only used by NPCs. (Presumably fixed. Kind of a pain to test, so this is based on user reports.)

Version 1.0 (23-11-19)
- Initial public release.
