Thanks a lot for this. Works pretty well. It's a shame that so few good movies are public domain. I'm going to add Return of the living Dead if I ever figure out the conversion process.
You might want to make sure it's in the public domain. I did a quick search for it, and it looks like it's copyrighted. NotLD is public domain purely because they forgot to put the copyright notice on which rendered it public domain. RotLD was produced in 1985, and even if they deliberately ignored the copyright notice, the 1976 Copyright Act (UK) did away with the need to put a notice on at all. This would more than likely offer enough protection for them to be able to take legal action, and even if they didn't Nexus will delete anything they know is copyrighted. The reason NotLD didn't eventually get copyright protection is because the law didn't apply retroactively, and it was produced in 1968.
Reading that back to myself it was a little misleading. Sorry, I meant to say I will try adding it to the game for myself. I think it would be a perfect movie to set the mood in my settlement. One of my favorite movies.
When you say it like that, it makes sense why there are so few VOTW add-ons. Probably doesn't help that the conversion process is a nightmare lol.
Have a look at https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/articles/1375 for a guide on how to streamline the NIF editing process. If you get stuck or need help then drop me a PM (just so we don't clutter the posts up lol). This goes for anyone else too :)
Something I'd recommend is splitting the video into 10 minute chunks for lengthy videos (use WinFF as it's free and does what's needed). While it's not clean (a holotape will change mid scene usually), the settlers don't seem to mind, and it has an added advantage. The advantage is that the end frame of the last grid in the section will always be the same until the last part, so you can just copy the same NIF and then just change the path value in HxD, and then all you need to do is tidy up the last part so it uses the right amount of grids and end frame.
Hey iconic, appreciate the tips. I've already skimmed through Razorwire's video's but got a bit intimidated. Put it on the back burner for a time when my ADD isn't kicking in so hard lol. Thanks also for your offer to help. The most demotivating part about all this is that I won't even be able to share it even if I succeed. That part really blows.
You wouldn't be the first. Some of my settlers have had blockbusters in recent times, and I occasionally convert dance videos off YouTube for my nightclub.
I've been working on something called the Media Lounger (a reworking of the Memory Lounger), and the video conversion process for that is a lot easier, and plays in full screen. It's basically using an earlier form of Bink compression, and although it requires some preparation of the source material, it only took me around 20 minutes to convert a full film. The other advantage is that you're not limited by time in regards to compressing, and use something like Premiere to create clean chapters.
The downside is I'm trying to work out how to mitigate the fact that it returns twice on the activation script (the Power Armor can return three times), and a simple toggle isn't working. It's also not as "showy" and you won't see the video your settlers are watching as they sit in there. If you have a look, very much aware it's still a work in progress, but if you pull it apart in the CK you can see how it works (you might need to Champolion the scripts until I get the tutorial sorted, which will be when I mitigate the double fire issue).
Hah, that sounds really cool. That for me is what makes VOTW content so special. The intimacy it creates between the player and the game world is truly profound. It's a shame that you don't quite get the same effect with fullscreen implementations. The most important aspect of this mod for me is that not only does it create an incredibly vivid and tangible roleplaying dynamic, but it does so while maintaining that all-too-important real-time connection with the player and the environment.
If only Bethesda saw the potential in this. I reckon this would have become one of the most popular and successful DLC's they would ever release.
Good luck with the Media Lounger. I think you could have a lot of fun with that if you manage to get NPC's to actively sit in them and possibly even have audio output leak out from each device as they watch. That would really sell the immersion.
Please for the love of all that is holy, ive never felt the need to comment on any mods before this one and ive used Nexus for almost 10 years, this will be the ONLY time i ever comment but i feel that it is important enough, PLEASE atleast consider making some of these channels fallout recreation videos work on Votw, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbtJZuGvOV-mcU4VBVYUTsA/videos & https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPKyIxyUdmZ2javlrNnAeDyqyW4tFxOL4 , This alone would make my fallout immersion 10x better and would (imo) be the best VotW mod hands down, itd be like little pieces of lore that arent getting mentioned anymore can be re-embedded into the game, i was honestly a second away from learning how to put these in the game myself but i have 0 knowledge and experience with modding (not even fallout just modding period) so im afraid i cant do it myself so please atleast consider doing this, id be the 1st to endorse i promise that
I crafted all the parts 1-10 put them into the projector and nothing happens, also tried the tv nothing so i tried a different one from cartoons it played right away, so am i missing a step or is it outdated?
It didn't work for me using Radiation Star on the large wall-sized screen with front speakers. It did work with Radiation Queen on the normal sized TVs.
Hi, I love this here mod plugin! I was wondering if anyone could give me a little insight. My Night of the Living Dead holotapes play great on the Radiation Queen but they won't play at all on the projector. I saw in the comments that the last two tapes weren't working in the projector but I can't get any of them to play on the projector. I have successfully played a VNF holotape and the Teenagers From Outer Space holotapes on the same projector so I'm certain it's not the projector itself (i.e. no obstructions, not too close or too far from the screen etc). If anyone has any advice I'd be very grateful as I love this movie (even without the last two tapes lol).
Little late to the party but if I'm remembering correctly there is actually a Holotape Crafting Station that you have to construct in order to craft the holotapes. It's under the Videos of the Wasteland category in workshop mode. Hope that helps!
Something I've been planning to do, but I found it all daunting... But you see to be good at this sort of thing... maybe you could help out? I've been wanting to bring the old 1930's anti-marijuana propaganda film, Reefer Madness to Starlight Drive-In. :D It's so cheesy and hilarious...
It's not daunting at all. Have a look at Razorwire's workshop on Youtube. He's done some really easy to follow videos, and also explains stuff at just the right level for you to understand things. It's here... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzDg2-J0RnilLB5Q6BUv6bw
Regarding film reels, Starlight Drive In is different with the limitations on it, I think. The template files I use to make these use grids, and for a 10 minute segment I need 24 grids. For the Starlight Drive-In the maximum template I have is for 8 grids which only gives me 3m 24s. Reefer Madness is approximately 66 minutes long which would mean I'd have to make around 20 reels. At that point the whole thing just becomes unwieldy, and you'd have to manually swap out every reel at the end of the section because you can't load more than one reel in at a time.
I may do a TV/projector version at some point (it is a classic film), but I don't actually do requests. This one only came about because it was in the to-do list, and I'd already converted it so just needed to do the NIFs and ESPs for it, and when a user asked for it I just bumped it up the list.
Ah yea, I understand and yea, it having to be 15-20 reels was part of why I thought it was so daunting. Wasn't sure if it was something doable. Can Starlight do like 6min? I'll have to double check Razorwire's tutorials. As for swapping, ya I know. I sort of understand why that limitation exists, but wish there was a way around it, like forcing an unload of the reel then loading the next one (but I totally know they probably already thought of that and it won't work for some reason.)
EDIT: Okay, so I think I might go ahead and do it, but do you (or someone else reading this) know how to add them to the world? While yea you can craft them (if I choose to allow that... kind of thinking it might be cool if it's not craftable but can only be found) I think it would be cool to place them at South Boston High School ( https://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/South_Boston_High_School ) Maybe with a special container called "Dangers of Marihuana Presentation" or something LOL
