Double-Barrel Shotgun Weapon Rework
Originally starring as homage to Mad Max's famous sawn-off shotgun, the Double-barrel Shotgun has become a familar face in the Fallout Franchise. However, its latest iteration is arguably the worst thus far due to poor stats and rather small list of available mods. Low accuracy, range, and damage makes it only useful in the beginning of the game before being completely outclassed by practically every other weapon latter on in terms of performance.

However, all that has been fixed and more with the rebirth of the Savage/Stevens 311.

Sporting 82 base damage along with increased accuracy and range, the Savage/Stevens 311 is now a shotgun that farmers, raiders, and everyone in-between would fine useful compared to the point-blank mess it was before. With a unchanging VATS cost of 34 AP,  a base weight of 4 pounds (5 less then Vanilla's), and more then double the fire rate, the Savage/Stevens 311 is a much more formidable weapon to both wield and fight against. Every mod has been reworked so that they are each suitable for different playstyles and none are a discernibly direct upgrade, benefits often coming at the cost of increased felt recoil, weight, or another meaningful stat.

Muzzles have received a minor rework to properly reflect their purposes and make each offer different advantages. The Muzzle Brake stays largely as-is, decreasing felt recoil and little more. The Combat Choke, previous called the Spiked Muzzle Brake, decreases recoil too but not as much. However, it offers increased melee damage and boosts range somewhat as well due its nature as a choke.

Sights have been overhauled as well, no longer altering any stats other then weight. They perform just like one would expect, making aiming easier at various ranges and affecting nothing else.

Barrels have received the same treatment, primarily determining range and affecting weight accordingly. The sawed-off barrel is now called the 14-inch Barrel and offers the worst spread and range out of the three options but is the lightest unsurprisingly. The 18-inch Barrel is the middle-ground, sporting decent range, weight, and spread. The 26-inch Barrel is the longest and heaviest of the trio though its excellent range and  decent spread makes it suitable for tackling targets further out then point-blank distance.

The damage-boosting Receivers have been scrapped entirely, their average damage increase added to the base damage, in favor of balancing and realism. There are now just three options to choose from: Stainless Steel (Standard), Aluminum (formerly Light), and Heavy-duty (Heavy in Vanilla). Stainless Steel is the base receiver and thus offers no drawbacks but no benefits either. Aluminum decrease weight greatly but at the cost of increased felt recoil. Heavy-duty, on the other hand, decreases felt recoil at the cost of increased weight.

A brand-new feature called Firing Mode also been added. You can switch between the two at a Weapons Workbench but a hotkey system may be implemented in the future. Single-shot performs as expected while Double-shot allows the weapon to mimic past Sawn-off Shotguns in previous titles; doubling damage, pellet count, and recoil while only offering one shot before reloading.

Lastly, Grips have been slightly altered. The default Pistol Grip offers no benefits or drawbacks while the Rifle Shoulder Stock increases stability and decreases felt recoil at the cost of added weight.

Crafting recipes have been changed to be as logical as possible. The only perks necessary to craft are Gun Nut 1 for the Receivers and Rank 2 for the Muzzle options.

Some notable changes outside of the mods and the weapon itself have also been made. The most significant of them is the removal of the Leveled List system for the Double-barrel Shotgun, allowing the mods to be found and used at any level both by the player and enemies. The second-most important is that Legendary effects can no longer be placed or spawn on Double-barrel Shotguns. These two changes are personal attempts to handle said poorly-implemented systems and make weapon usage more organic and less heavy-handed. Lastly, prefixes and suffixes have been removed as well meaning the Double-barrel Shotgun should spawn as "Stevens/Savage 311" only. If you don't want to accidentally scrap or sell a customized version, it's highly recommended to give said weapon a unique name.

Finally, for those who wish for a more hardcore and/or immersive experience, an optional patch has been added removing the ability to craft any of the weapon mods. This will force you to scavenge, loot, and/or buy the mods you desire. Personally, I feel this adds a level of thrill when you finally get that one mod you've been hunting for and I highly recommend it. The removal of Leveled Lists makes this a player-friendly option without making it too easy as well.

Future Plans
New unique weapons featuring detachable mods with special effects/stats or replicas of unique Double-barrel Shotguns from previous titles may be added in the future if I can figure out how to get them to spawn properly. Having a second shell removed when firing using the Double-shot Configuration/using two per trigger pull is what was originally intended but couldn't find a way to implement it. Those two things aside, the mod may be left as-is for the time being.

Compatibility/Issues
This mod will conflict with any others that touch the Double-barrel Shotgun or its mods. Projectiles and ammo are untouched though so those should not conflict with those that change them.

The only discernible issue is that due to changing vanilla mods and adding an additional slot to the Double-barrel Shotgun, all existing weapons will have to be dropped/modified at a workbench in order to have the name changed to "Savage/Stevens 311" and to have the option of firing in Double-shot available. However, the default mode is Single-shot so all instances will still function properly. Instances generated post-mod installation will be named properly and be either Single- or Double-shot without player assistance already. Starting a brand-new game will have all instances function as intended but is not necessary.

Recommended Mods
These are the mods I used in the screenshots and/or ones I suggest to get more bang for your buckshot. However, they are not included in the mod itself and must be downloaded separately.

Black Double-barrel Shotgun - Those wishing for a darker finish will find this a delight.

Scratch-made Double-barrel Shotgun Retexture - Made by Millenia, this overhaul of the Shotgun's appearance gives new life to the old weapon.

Double-barrel Shotgun Antique Retexture - Give your shotgun an aged look to but don't worry, it'll still be as powerful as ever. Combine this with the Double-barrel Shotgun Reload Animation along with the Double-shot Mod below to give yourself a makeshift DOOM Super Shotgun.

Double-barrel Shotgun Polymer Stock -  Turning the wooden rifle stock into a polymer one, this retexture goes well with military-themed characters.

Double-barrel Shotgun Sounds Redesigned - For wastelanders who want to blast their troubles away to a different tune.

Double-barrel Shotgun Sound Replacer - Mixing the vanilla shotgun sound with that from the famous STALKER series, this will make your double-barrel feel infused with a hundred pounds of pure, uncut Columbian Badassium.

Double-barrel Shotgun Reload Animation - Replacing the vanilla reload animation and sounds, this makes the weapon feel more impressive when loading fresh shells.

Double-barrel Shotgun Battlefield 1 Animation Pack - Utilizing animations based on those from Battlefield 1, this will definitely make using the Double-barrel Shotgun feel like a brand-new weapon. However, compatibility with the Double-barrel Shotgun Weapon Rework has not been tested and use together at your own risk.

This mod is or will be included in Project Phoenix, a complete rework of Fallout 4 from the ground up. The mod can be found here while the dedicated forum is located here.
