Adds a new category of recipes at the Chemistry Station called "AMMO CONVERSIONS". Here there are recipes for breaking down tier-appropriate amounts of conventional ballistic ammo into Ballistic Ammo Material, which you can then use to make new ammo. You can break down any relevant ammo type without requirements, but you can only make new ammo if you have the right rank of Gun Nut. See "Amounts and Perk Requirements" section. The version of the mod you install determines the amount of Ballistic Ammo Material you get from breaking down rounds, and the amount of it you need to make rounds, determining the efficiency of conversion.
Overview:
This is a simple and straightforward recipe mod, meant to allow you to convert different types of basic ballistic ammunition into other types of basic ballistic ammunition, in a streamlined fashion. Does NOT include the 2mm EC ammo type, since it's not a classic bullet&powder&casing kind of cartridge. This mod does NOT add recipes for CRAFTING NEW ammo from basic resources, nor allow you to break down ammo into generally useable resources.
This mod is primarily meant for players that use a particular type of ammo and want to be able to convert ammo they don't need into that ammo type. As such it uses a simple system that often deals in large quantities of ammo at a time, for breaking down bulks of unwanted surplus ammo.
Any type of relevant ammo can be broken down into another type, but to convert to a specific ammo type you'll usually need some rank in the Gun Nut perk.
The mod has several download options that determine the efficiency rates of ammo conversion.
The mod requires both the Far Harbor DLC and the Nuka-World DLC.
This mod was initially made for personal use, and is not necessarily very fancy and polished.
How it works:
At any Chemistry Station, a new Crafting Sub-Category has been added, called "AMMO CONVERSION", where you can find 22 new recipes.
Half of the new recipes are breakdown recipes, that yield a certain amount of a new miscellaneous item called "Ballistic Ammo Material". These recipes have no perk requirements and they all yield the same amount of Ballistic Ammo Material, by breaking down an appropriate amount of ballistic ammo of some type. The amount of Ballistic Ammo Material yielded by the recipes depends on the mod version you installed.
The other half of the recipes are recipes for making different types of ballistic ammo using Ballistic Ammo Material. These recipes all require the same amount of Ballistic Ammo Material, and yield an amount of ammo appropriate for each given ammo type. Due to how the Fallout 4 crafting interface works, you cannot directly see the amount of ammo you'll get, but the amount given is always the same as the amount of that ammo type used in the breakdown recipes, so you can look at the ammo breakdown recipe to confirm the amount you'll get from the equivalent ammo creation recipe.
Since I didn't think this mod through well enough, the ammo breakdown and ammo creation recipes aren't neatly separated in the recipe list.
Amounts and Perk Requirements:
Ammo breakdown and ammo creation recipes always use the same quantity for each type of ammo. The perk requirements shown bellow apply only to creation recipes, not breakdown recipes. The amounts by which you break down/create the different ammo types are(sorted by amount):
(Ammo Type)(Amount)(Perk Requirement)
.38..................x50...................None
5mm..............x45.................Gun Nut 1
10mm............x40.................Gun Nut 1
.45..................x30.................Gun Nut 1
5.56mm.........x30.................Gun Nut 1
.44..................x25.................Gun Nut 1
7.62mm.........x25.................Gun Nut 2
.Shotshell......x20.................Gun Nut 1
.308................x20.................Gun Nut 2
.45-70............x15.................Gun Nut 2
.50..................x10.................Gun Nut 3
Again note that this mod was initially made for personal use, and crudely so. The amounts of ammo required or produced by the recipes was based off of some rough compromise of loosely estimated in-game value of the ammo, and fairly uneducated assumptions about the actual size of the real-life cartridges they seem to be based on. Similarly, the perk requirements are essentially base do whims that went through my head, and aren't easy to motivate. In hindsight, some things could probably be be balanced better, and more still are questionable as a matter of opinion. If you take issue with the amounts or perk requirements, it should be very easy to go into the Creation Kit and change the amounts required and yielded by the breakdown and construction recipes, as well as change the requirements.
Installation & Options:
There are 3 available versions of the mod, all of which are variations on the same plugin, so you should be able to switch between them with no issue. The difference between these versions is the amount of Ballistic Ammo Material yielded from all the breakdown recipes, and the amount required for all the ammo creation recipes:
- 1by2 Conversion - All breakdown recipes yield 1 Ballistic Ammo Material and all creation recipes require 2 Ballistic Ammo Material, making conversions about 50% efficient.
- 2by3 Conversion - All breakdown recipes yield 2 Ballistic Ammo Material and all creation recipes require 3 Ballistic Ammo Material, making conversions about 67% efficient.
- 1by1 Conversion - All breakdown recipes yield 1 Ballistic Ammo Material and all creation recipes require 1 Ballistic Ammo Material, making conversions about 100% efficient. (Note that this allows you to break down and create the same ammo type ovre adn over again to infinitely grind XP. Use at your own discretion)
To install the mod, make sure that your Fallout 4 game is set up to handle mods, and that the "Simple Ballistic Ammo Conversion Mod.esp" file is in your Fallout 4 Data folder, or install it with your modding tool of choice. Also make sure you have both the Far Harbor DLC and Nuka-World DLC before installing.
Incompatabilities:
- Obviously, this mod will only allow the breakdown and re-construction of the ammo types listed above, any ammo types added by other mods will not be covered by this mod.
- Horizon - If you're playing with Horizon, for some reason that messes with the DLC ammo types, those being the .45-70 and 7.62mm rounds. So when using this mod in combination with Horizon, instead of producing usable rounds of those types, the conversion recipes will produce "damaged" rounds, which are an unusable scrap variant of the round. Likewise, you won't be able to break down .45-70 and 7.62mm rounds in order to convert them into other ammo, instead the recipe is going to want the "damaged" versions of the rounds. This removes the practical utility of those particular recipes, but converting to and from other types of ammo should still work fine.
Issues/quirks:
- This mod should not mess with performance or cause issues with other mods as far as I can fathom.
- Due to some apparent quirk of the Fallout 4 crafting interface, when crafting an item for which there are multiple recipes, the chosen recipe can shift unwantedly to some other recipe for the same item. This can be an issue when breaking down ammo into Ballistic Ammo Material, since the chosen recipe may shift from breaking down one ammo type to breaking down another.
- The recipes are again not ordered very well.
- The mod breaks standard naming convension somewhat, in that the .esp is called "Simple Ballistic Ammo Conversion Mod.esp", instead of "SimpleBallisticAmmoConversionMod.esp".
Thoughs:
I hope I didn't make the description way too long. If you have any thoughs about the mod, feel free to post them in the comments, and I'll probably read them. I'm open to suggestions, but I'm also very lazy, so there's no garuantee I'll do anything you request of me. If you find some major error or inconsistency, let me know, and I'll probably upload a fixed version.
If you wanna change or expand something in the mod, and you're not counting on me to do it, then you could probably do the changes to the mod yourself, as long as it's for personal use. I think that recipe mods such as this one are a good place to start when it comes to learning to use the Creation Kit. Filter by "co_chem_ammoconversion" to find the conversion recipes, and filter by "ballisticammomaterial" to find the Ballistic Ammo Material item when you have the mod loaded in your Creation Kit.
