So, I decided to read some of the comments here, and I was amazed by what some people have to say. It is obvious, that these people have no idea, what they are talking about, just like the person, who designed this "pipe gun" monstrosity, had no idea how guns work, because rusty textures aside, this "gun" cannot possibly function from a mechanical point of view. But I digress.

First: Rust, especially bright orange rust like this, is not something durable. It's something like a powder and can be wiped away, leaving a dark brownish surface (which you can see on my screenshots). So, a gun, or any tool, that is carried on a person most of the time, can't be covered in rust, because it would be automatically wiped by hands and clothes. Not to mention, that a "pipe gun" is made, well, out of pipes and other industrial scrap metal, which is often galvanized and not gonna rust easily.

Second: Some people claim, that the gun is rusty because it is made out of old, rusty components. You... You do realize, that the person, who would make such a gun, would have cleaned the rust first, right? Right?

I can't wait for my character to get his hands on such a beautiful gray little one. The orange color didn't really bother me, I wasn't so interested in how the rust would affect everything else. Whether the gun would work at all in such conditions in the real life. But gray is much cooler, and most weapons exist in some shade of gray in RL In general. So thanks for the mod. I think it will be great in my game.

I don't care if the vanilla textures were supposed to represent rust, russeted, or stalinium. They look ugly, that's why we're all here on this mod page that changes them.

Thanks OP for a texture that doesn't make me feel like I'm being stabbed in the eyes whenever I see a pipe gun.

      +1
We are all here to tailor our game to our needs. Some people like to have barbie looking dolls in their wasteland, some like to have OP future advanced tech, some like to take a little of rust from their weapons...

So as a "realism" and "lore friendly" nutjob as well, this mod is really low in the "things-in-this-site-that-would-take-me-of-my-immersion" scale.

Holy crap lol. Whole essays on gun materials and all that in the comments. I liked the vanilla textures, these textures look neat as well.

I always imagined the pipe weapons were made from copper materials and painted sheet metal that was bent into shape lol.

My only complaint is that the long light barrel is still bright orange (on the bolt action atleast)

This mod's claim to be "more realistic" may not be entirely correct, and most comments below (even those who like the vanilla textures) are mistaken too.

The pipe guns in FO4 are not rusty, they are quick-russeted (or at least that's probably the intended look). And in post-apocalyptia that would make a lot more sense than your desire to see nice clean/blued guns. If you go back to the 16th century, russeting was done to protect the surface. Essentially a controlled chemical rusting, using vinegar or even urine & sawdust, to oxidize the surface and protect from further weathering. This is where the "Brown" in the famous late 18th century Brown Bess musket came from - it was the russeting of all the exposed metal parts and not the nice wooden stock - for all guns back then had nice wooden stocks!

Modern bluing of metal parts replaced russeting not because it's better (it's actually lesser protection!) but is quicker and cheaper, and looks nicer. But bluing also uses more heat and refined chemicals (depending on the method) which though easy to do today, could be more difficult/costly in a raider's post-apocalyptic backstreet garage. By comparison, russeting can be done with urine! The problem with russeting is (if done to it's best) it's time-consuming, takes days, repeating the process (with scrubbings in between) all in a controlled way to get a desired depth and evenness - and some practice to get right. However, it can be done as a quicker once-over if you are being cheap & nasty. So which is a more likely process in post-apocalyptia - heat treatments with chemicals & oils, or a few days of urine followed by a rub-down?

Now, there may be confusion here because russeting itself was later refined such that by the 19th century with oilings and more polished surfaces it wouldn't look merely rusty, but instead a nice shiny metal with a brown tint - but of course this was even more time-consuming and expensive. And any older antique russeted weapons we see today have been subsequently oiled and polished in this victorian way to look nicer. But russeting in post-apocalyptia would be more like the 16th century urine type, and not made to look nicer to potential buyers:
"Here ya go, I already pissed on it for ya..."

FO4's texture of the effect can be argued over, but is meant to be russeting, with some weather-rust on untreated parts, and not just "rusty". Now, if you prefer a more familiar, prettier 21st century "gun look", go ahead and use this mod - but don't fool yourself that it's somehow definitely more real. Personally, I think somewhere between the vanilla's bright orange colouring and the duller tones of this mod would be more accurate (hence my download to see if I can tweak it for my use) but that's going purely on a piece of 16th century armour I own - I haven't pissed on any untreated, backstreet, home-made 23rd century guns lately, so can't be entirely certain what they should look like...
    Anyway, thanks.

There's also a lot of russeted cars, train carriages and other machinery scattered through the Commonwealth. It's touching how people who live in a filth in their own homes take such a great care of those non-functioning remnants of the past.
