Wood crates and vault crates throughout the game are now containers instead of static decoration. In them you will find basic building materials. Crates in a few select locations contain other, more specific items like prewar food.

The main file requires only the base game. Then add appropriate optional files for your DLCs. Individual files are included for the various DLCs that place crates in the game; Automatron, Far Harbor, Vault Tec Workshop, and Nuka World. You can cherry pick which files you need for the DLCs you own. There is also a merged file that includes all these DLCs. Do NOT load the merged file with any of the individual DLC files.

Wood crates will contain mundane materials; Aluminum, Cloth, Concrete, Leather, Steel, and Wood. Vault crates will contain other, more rare building materials. All crates will be affected by the Fortune Finder and Scrounger perks. Also, all crates can be scrapped at settlements. If you scrap them while they have contents, those contents will be transferred to the workshop like other containers.

I recommend placing this mod EARLY in your load order. EARLY, EARLY, EARLY!  If placed later, even though all I do is place crates, it can mess with changes other mods attempt to make to areas in the game. This is just how things work with mods in this game. When placed early in the load order, the crates will be placed and other mods can still make other changes without conflict. In any case, it can obviously conflict slightly with any mod that moves vanilla crates. "Cleanup" mods occasionally do this.

I must make an important note regarding how this mod was executed. Another, earlier mod on the Nexus does something similar, by completely replacing existing static crates throughout the game. This breaks a lot of precombined meshes and causes a multitude of graphics issues. Here is a notable example; The gear elevator in Vault 111 is frequently rendered invisible by changes to Vault 111 whether those changes directly affect the elevator or not. These issues seem to have gotten worse more recently, probably due to Bethesda's updates to the game. According to Chucksteel, of Interiors fame, Bethesda has altered several things regarding precombined meshes in these updates and he has had to update Beantown Interiors accordingly. While these problems are not the fault of the other crate mod's author, they exist nevertheless. My mod rebuilds the container crate concept from scratch, but does not touch the original crates in the game. They're still there, exactly as they were. This mod places new container crates in EXACTLY the same position as the originals, but are just 1% larger. You will probably not see the difference as you play. The only time it will be apparent is at settlements. When you move or scrap one of these new containers, the original static crate will be revealed under it. Not to worry, they can still be moved and scrapped as normal. The only vanilla item I altered was a locked truck trailer door that was badly positioned by Bethesda. The only reason I fixed that was the fact there are crates inside the trailer with special contents.

There are more than 10,000 crates throughout the Commonwealth, 4000 more in the DLCs. While it is possible, perhaps likely, that some mistakes were made, a lot of crates around the game world are not static items, but destructable objects. Most of the ones at Bedford Station and some in the Museum of Freedom come to mind. I made no attempt to affect those crates. If you approach a crate and it doesn't appear to be a container, it's probably breakable. Throw a grenade at it if means that much to you. You won't get any loot out of it, but it might make you feel better. Also, some crates are badly positioned in the original game. There are several places, such as the Corvega Factory and Hardware Town, where wood crates are clipped together. Some of them do so at weird angles. I make no attempt to "fix" these as it would involve moving or eliminating vanilla crates. That would go against what I'm attempting to do here; place containers while not touching vanilla crates.

Before you ask; yes the gear elevator in Vault 111 is perfectly visible with this mod installed.
