New, Fully-Voiced Thoughts for Curie to Share!
Have you ever noticed just how much dialogue that the companions in Fallout IV have to draw from? It's impressive, really—far more so than the dead-eyed followers from Skyrim, at least. For years I was thrilled with being able to ask them different things as we adventured through the Wastes, hearing how our relationship changed and evolved. Recently, however, I discovered something that began to nag at me—these companions, after all the years of hearing their thoughts and views on our relationship, were getting pretty boring and repetitive. As well, I’d come across YouTube videos where I would hear companions make comments that I had never heard before!
So, after realizing just how much juicy companion dialogue I was missing out on and finding NOTHING explaining how to access it on the internet, I decided to try my hand at the Fallout IV Creation Kit. From this, I made the first in what I hope to progress into a series called “Deeper Thoughts,” with the goal in-mind to expand our wonderful companions’ pools of dialogue in a simple, easily-accessible way.
The real meat of what’s been changed is actually quite simple. Having finally found several hitherto unheard voice files set to activate during “Hellos,”—which, for some unknown reason, NEVER activated for me—I simply copied them and moved the duplicated files to the Idles pool, from which the “Your Thoughts?” option draws.
I decided to begin this adventure into (admittedly basic) modding with my personal favorite companion, Curie. I took the five voice lines from that section and added them to her “Your Thoughts?” dialogue when she “Loves” you, as well as six others from the “Infatuated” section (when you get to max affinity but don’t romance her), ensuring that she has more ways to say she loves/wants you, while also not being creepily-obsessed.
The same has been done to all affinity sections—Curie now has more thoughts to share when she Hates you, Disdains you, remains Neutral towards you, Admires you, is Infatuated with you, and Loves you. Some of these have even been mixed and matched to a tasteful extent, all the while staying true to how I’d assume she’d actually talk.
Lastly, there are two versions to this mod. The first is just labeled “Deeper Thoughts,” which only adds the “new” dialogue while keeping her normal background pool (including such lines as “It is hard to determine whether the surface is more or less susceptible to outbreaks” and “the influx of data is hard to process…”). However, if you’re like me and have been listening to Curie go on and on about “finding the men of science and institutes of learning” for so long you’d think she was a broken record, I’ve made a second version with my own endorsement—“Deeper Thoughts with Affinity-Sorted Dialogue.” What this version does is reassign these generic comments into affinity sections. For example, Curie will no longer ask to “see and scan indigenous lifeforms” after becoming a synth, or “continue to wonder if the data she’s collecting will serve any purpose” once she makes her big discovery. This is the version that I prefer using.
