About this mod

This simple guide/tutorial aims at helping other users in creating their very own "Unofficial HD Pack". No texture packs are provided with this mod. A beginner's guide more or less.

Feeling let down by the recently released High Resolution Texture Pack? Don't worry the Nexus community has got your back. We have been churning out good quality texture mods since way back when. So why not create your very own texture pack? Let's get on with the guide.

Why should you follow this guide?

Because most texture mods usually come as loose files as they don't require any plugin. Texture files (.dds) in .ba2 archives can improve performance over loose files, especially high quality texture files (4K).

...texture archives store textures in a more intelligent way that is friendlier to the runtime texture streamer. When reading a DDS file, finding the lower resolution textures requires seeking to, and therefore decompressing most of the file. This is inefficient, because in most cases you will care about the lower resolution mips first, when the object is off in the distance. Texture archives store any mips higher than 256x256 in their own separate blocks, while the 256x256 and below are all in their own block.

Tools required:

, an official Bethesda .ba2 archive utility, which is located in the same folder as your Fallout 4 installation (for most people = C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Tools). [EDIT: Only after you have installed the Creation Kit] Or, you can download one from within Bethesda.net launcher which requires a Bethesda.net account.

Fallout 4 Creation Kit, the official Fallout 4 modding tool, which you can download here. (Optional)

A File Archiver, 7-Zip preferred.

Bethesda Fallout 4 High Resolution Pack, to extract textures which are not covered by mods. (Optional)

Fallout 4 DDS Image Viewer, a very useful tool in viewing/selecting the texture files. (Recommended)

Texture Mods
I have listed some of the texture mods I currently use here:


Creating .ba2 file(s)

1.) Create a working folder where you can start putting all those texture files in.

2.) Unpack the texture pack mods you've just downloaded (by clicking "download manually" on the mod's download section) to your working folder. Or if you already have them installed by NMM, you can go to the mod folder within the NMM installation folder (Default = C:Program Files\Nexus Mod Manager\Fallout4\Mods) and grab them from there. It's best to know which ones you like the most as some of the texture packs contain the same files. Overwrite them as necessary.

The folder structure should look like this:


However some mods only contain texture files without normal/specular maps. Using a texture file from one mod with normal/specular maps from another mod can cause issue, so be careful.

3.) Open up Archive2, go to "File" > "New...". Under format, select "DDS" for texture files and "General" for everything else. Leave other settings as is.

Then, go to "Archive" > "Add Folder...". Now point the application to one of the subfolders (e.g. Textures) in your working folder. Some texture mods will also contain custom meshes and/or materials files, so pack them into SEPARATE .ba2 files ONE at a time.

Your Archive2 should look similar to this:


4.) Go to "File" > "Save As...". Name it as anything you like but keep this structure = YourHDPack - Textures.ba2, YourHDPack - Meshes.ba2, and YourHDPack - Materials.ba2. As mentioned earlier, do ONE file type at a time; i.e. Textures, Materials, and Meshes.

If you choose to install your archives through method B, you can pack both Materials (BGSM) and Meshes (NIF) together, and name your pack "YourHDPack - Main.ba2". That way you will end up with only two archives: textures.ba2 and main.ba2.

Installing your texture pack

There are two methods of loading your texture pack into the game. Only choose one.
A. Through an ESP file, for all archive types: Materials, Meshes, Textures. Most common.
B. Through an INI file, for texture-only archive containing only DDS files.

Method A: Creating .esp file (dummy)

Rename the dummy .esp file (provided with this mod) to whatever name you want, but remember that your .ba2 files must have the same name (pre-fix).

To create a dummy plugin yourself, launch Fallout 4 Creation Kit. And without touching anything, save.

Method B: Editing Fallout4.ini

Open up your Fallout4.ini in your documents folder. And add your archive names (where applicable) to the following:

"sResourceIndexFileList="   <- YourHDPack - Textures.ba2
"SResourceArchiveList="     <- YourHDPack - Meshes.ba2 AND YourHDPack - Materials.ba2
"SResourceArchiveMemoryCacheList="<- YourHDPack - Materials.ba2

Add them to the end of the list, separated by comma if you have more than one archive. Make sure to put all your other archives in the right place.

This step is the same for both methods. Copy/move your .esp (for method A) and .ba2 files to your Fallout 4 Data folder, and enable your plugin through mod manager of your choice or editing the plugin.txt if you're using method A. DONE!!!



Extracting .ba2 file

Go to "File" > "Open...". Browse to the .ba2 file you want to extract if you haven't ready associated the file type with the program. Then, go to "Archive" > "Extract All To..." or "Extract Selected To...". Now browse to your working folder or your desired location.
