About this mod

Collect components and craft ballistic fiber and acid.

Permissions and credits
My first published MOD!

This MOD includes everything necessary to add ballistic fiber crafting to the game.  Also, as a by-product you get acid which is used as a component by many ammo crafting MODS.  I also added the component Ammonia which is found by scrapping bladders from Molerats, Mutant Hounds, and Death Claws.  The bigger the animal, the more ammonia in it's bladder.

Here is the process:
  • Kill molerats, mutant hounds, and death claws to gather bladders.
  • Scrap the bladders to get ammonia.
  • Gather the other components: Fiberglass, Plastic, Oil, and Wild Mutfruit.
  • Go to the cooking station.  Under Utility, craft Fibrous Mass.
  • Scrap the Fibrous Mass to get 3 ballistic fiber and 3 acid.

Installation

If you use Nexus Mod Manager, just download it with the DOWNLOAD WITH MANAGER button on the files page.  Go into NMM and activate.  Choose the option (if any) you want.

For manual installation, just put CraftableBallisticFiber.esp (and CraftableBallisticFiber-Valdacils_Patch.esp if you want compatibility with Valdacil's Item Sorting) in your Fallout 4 Data directory, usually C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout 4\Data.  That's it! So easy!

Compatibility
I created a compatibility MOD to make this work with Valdacil's Item Sorting and DEF_INV.  You don't have to use it but without it the components from this MOD won't have the pretty sorting and icons you are use to.  It is included in the download package as an option, so no separate download is needed.  It MAY work with Better Item Sorting as well -- it uses similar tags -- but I have not tested that.

The only vanilla assets I tinkered with are molerats, mutant hounds, and death claws to give them bladders.  Unless you are using a mod that changes one of those it should not conflict.  Even if it does conflict, it should not crash your game but some animals may not have bladders. On the very off chance that someone else also tries to add ammonia as a component, that would also conflict but in a weird way it should still work.  My recipe just needs ammonia; it does not care where you get it.

Any loot mod or other mod that eliminates Wild Mutfruit would be a problem as that is required.

I have no idea how to make this work for consoles.  I have no console so I am unmotivated to try. You have my permission to convert it, but credit me as the original author. And let me know, of course.

Known Bugs
None! I fixed an issue where one of the components would not show up in the crafting menu.  So now it is PERFECT, right? If you do encounter a bug, please let me know.

I would love to see some feedback in the Posts section from those who download this MOD:
  • Have you crafted any ballistic fiber yet?
  • Was it more fun than searching for more military duct tape and ammo bags?
  • Was it balanced (not too hard or easy to gather components, etc.)?
  • What other locations have you found for Wild Mutfruit?
  • Any issues/compatibility problems?

FAQ
Q. Ok, DOESN'T this make getting ballistic fiber way too easy?  Isn't it just a cheat?
A. When I played this out it took a fair amount of effort to get what was needed to make the Fibrous Mass.  And, you know, they can always just get ballistic fiber at the console.  This seems like a reasonable alternative to searching everywhere for military grade duct tape.

Q. OMG this is so hard!  Why did you make it so hard?
A. You really need to talk to the guy asking the question above.  Really, it's no more difficult and a lot less boring than looking for more military grade duct tape.  If that's not your thing just do this in game:
  • type ~
  • type player.additem 000aec5b 1000
  • type ~
You should not have to search for ballistic fiber again.

Q. I see the recipe in the cooking station Utility menu but it's always grayed out.  I have all the components.
A. You also need the Armorer 3 perk. And make sure you have WILD Mutfruit, not the common stuff.

Q. Where do you find Wild Mutfruit?
A.  Wild Mutfruit is found in the wild in woody areas.  Specifically:
Spoiler:
Show

  • Behind a house in Sanctuary.
  • There is a little to the north of Sanctuary near the water.
  • Far of the bridge in Sanctuary, just to the NW.
  • Lots of it in the woods behind Red Rocket.  Look around the water tower, all around Abernathy Farm, and between the farm and Concord.
  • In the woods around Wicked Shipping.
  • Around Chestnut Hillock Reservoir.
  • In the woods around Salem near the Museum of Witchcraft.  Watch for bears!
  • In the woods around The Slog and Saugus Ironworks.  Just outside the fence at The Slog.
  • In the woods around Concord.
  • Diamond City greenhouse.
  • Lots more locations...I'll add to this list.

Q. Why does it take so many steps?  Why can't I craft it directly?
A. Because of the way Bethesda handles construction and scrapping.  You have to build something, then scrap it to get the components.  In this case we are basically transforming one set of components (Ammonia, Fiberglass, Plastic, Oil, Wild Mutfruit) into another set of components (Ballistic Fiber, Acid).  The intermediate steps are what makes that possible.

Q. Why do we get acid?
A. I actually looked up the chemistry for Kevlar and found it produced hydrochloric acid as a by-product, so I included it in the game.  I tried to  follow the actual chemistry as closely as possible in-game, which makes my recipe...nothing like the real-life way of making Kevlar. But I did try. That's also why I added ammonia. Kinda nerdy, I know.

Q. You mean we have to dig through corpses to get their bladders?  So we use pee to extract ammonia for this?  Ick!  Just ick!
A.  Yeah, I'm kinda LMAO thinking about it now.  Be careful not to nick those full bladders when extracting them! LOL.
